Top 25 Most Affordable Accredited Master’s in School Counseling Online

By Kirsten Hughes

A master’s in school counseling online will prepare graduates to pursue their professional goals of working in K-12 school settings as a professional school counselor. School counselors are trained to provide advocacy, assessment, and evaluation, as well as personal, social, developmental, academic, and career counseling to students in grades K-12. School counselors collaborate with a broad range of populations including students, parents, teachers, coaches, community members as well as school staff and administrators.

Featured Schools

Most online graduate programs in school counseling require the completion of an internship (generally 100 hours) and a practicum experience (600 hours). Do not let these requirements dissuade you from pursuing these programs. The practicum and internship requirements are built into the programs to be completed in ways that feel manageable for even the busiest students. Practicum and internships are generally completed in your local community and are worth the time and effort because they provide valuable learning opportunities and skill development. Additionally, the experience you gain and the relationships you build during this time are good resume builders and references for future employment opportunities.

Best Counseling DegreesMany of the master’s  in school counseling online programs listed here also require residencies. These are face-to-face components of the program, generally taking place a couple of times during the course of the program for a few days to a week at a time. Again, do not let this particular requirement lead you to overlook the program. Residencies provide numerous benefits, from developing relationships with fellow students and faculty to enhancing the educational experience. Many graduates of online counseling programs list the residency as a top highlight. Most residencies take place on the main campus. Students should consider extra costs that come along with residencies such as transportation, lodging, and meals.

A note on licensure and accreditation: Students are encouraged to contact their home state’s licensing board to determine if the university they wish to attend meets their home state’s licensing and certification requirements. All schools on this list are regionally accredited and some of them are also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and/or Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educations Programs (CACREP). Students graduating from accredited programs have a competitive career advantage and often experience a more seamless process towards licensure.

We believe that you will find among the schools on this list the best master’s in school counseling online to meet your personal and professional goals.

Methodology: How These Programs Were Selected for the 2015 Ranking

To develop the ranking of the Top 25 Most Affordable and Accredited Master’s in School Counseling Online, we started by using the Institute of Education Sciences’ College Navigator to gather a list of schools that offered a degree in school counseling with a distance education option.
