Bachelor of Science in Psychology – Christian Counseling

The Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a Christian Counseling specialization is designed to teach students about the many aspects of working in Christian Counseling and ministry. This degree is designed for non-clinical positions in the field, and for those who wish to help those needing psychological assistance with a Christian view. There are a number of core classes required for this degree, and they cover general studies, psychology, and Christian values:

  • Communication
  • Math, Science & Technology
  • Information Literacy
  • Critical Thinking

Outside of these classes, students will also take three courses in Christian Life and Thought including:

  • Contemporary World Views
  • Survey of Biblical Literature
  • Introduction to Christian Thought

The skills courses that students need to take include general courses in psychology and developmental psychology. These courses supplement the courses required for the major. There are many core courses for this intensive program including:

There are several courses that pertain strictly to Christian Counseling, too, and a student is required to take a minimum of two in order to earn a degree. These options include:

  • Christian Counseling for Marriage & Family
  • Christian Counseling for Children
  • Christian Counseling for Women
  • Issues in Human Sexuality

There is also room for 24 credits of electives in this program, which the student can choose on their own accord. There are many career options available for keen students who complete this degree. Students may work as a non-licensed Christian counselor, advocate, case manager, community relations officer or in the mental health services.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology – Crisis Counseling

A Bachelor of Science in Psychology degree with a Crisis Counseling specialization aims to provide students with a well-rounded background in counseling so that they can work in crisis or post-crisis situations. This program is designed to be both theoretical and practical and will also teach students methods of counseling and how to evaluate methods in the Christian context. There are four core areas of learning required for this degree:

  • Math, Science & Technology
  • Information Literacy
  • Critical Thinking

Students will also take courses in Christian life and thought, which are aligned with the university’s Christian worldview. These classes include:

The specialization courses apply to counseling in crisis situations. There are 15 credit hours of courses required to complete the major in psychology with the specialization in Crisis Counseling:

  • Foundational Principles of Crisis Response
  • Acute Stress, Grief & Trauma
  • PTSD & Combat-Related Trauma
  • Trauma Assessment & Intervention
  • Complex Trauma and Disasters

There is also room for 24 credits worth of electives to take with this degree. This degree is not specified for licensure, but it prepares students for several rewarding career paths such as crisis counselor, crisis care, community relations officer, administration or corporate crisis management.
