Argosy University's first institution was a psychology school in Illinois, established in 1976 in Chicago. Argosy itself grew from the merging of three original campuses: the American School of Professional Psychology, the University of Sarasota and the Medical Institute of Minnesota. Over the past 40 years, Argosy has grown into a network of for-profit institutions spread out across 13 states, most recently acquiring a law school in California. The school system also offers a wide array of programs entirely online. While Argosy is unranked by U.S. News and World Report, the institution as a whole is accredited, and many of its programs hold individual accreditation from their respective boards.

In Minnesota, the physical campus of Argosy, Twin Cities is located Eagan and offers several psychology programs at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. As a branch of the larger Argosy network, The Minnesota School of Professional Psychology offers just one program: a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology. According to the school's data sheet, 258 students have earned a doctoral degree in psychology from the program since 2008, most of whom completed the degree in about six years.

Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University Accreditation Details

Argosy University holds institutional accreditation from the Senior College and University Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. In addition, Minnesota School of Professional Psychology's Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology that has earned accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association.

Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University Application Requirements

Those who are interested in applying for the Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology program will need to apply to the admissions department of the Minnesota School directly. Several documents are required, but an on-campus representative can assist interested applicants. To apply, candidates will need to submit:

  • A completed application form
  • A nonrefundable application fee
  • A personal goal statement outlining the applicant's qualifications for becoming a clinical psychologist
  • A career summary or current resume
  • Three recommendations via the Applicant Recommendation Form
  • All official transcripts from postsecondary institutions

Students will also need to meet specific requirements to be considered for admission, including a minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.25 for graduates. If students don't meet this minimum, then they may still be admitted depending on their aptitude for the program and its rigorous requirements. All exceptions to the admissions policy will need to be approved by the program chair. Additional requirements include:

  • An accredited bachelor's degree
  • An interview with the admissions committee for the program
  • Completion of an English proficiency exam for non-native English speakers

The GRE is optional for this program, but students can submit their scores online through Argosy's website. Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition and fees are standard among Argosy's programs regardless of where they're located, with a few exceptions. At the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology, students will pay $1,162 per credit hour for the Ph.D. program. In addition, the tuition rate for the clinical psychology retreat and internship is the equivalent of one credit hour for every semester that a student is enrolled. General fees include annual student fees, semester-based technology fees and other charges. Students may also pay additional program-specific fees based on their degree and residency. Argosy University offers four types of scholarships for those who need help paying for tuition and fees. These include:

Degree in Focus: Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology

The psychology programs across Argosy's network of schools emphasize "teaching and practical training over the research oriented approach of the traditional PhD degree" according to the school website. The Minnesota School operates on a practitioner-scholar model, allowing students to hone their skills as clinical psychologists while bolstering their knowledge of different theories and contemporary techniques.

Students are encouraged not only to rely on research throughout the program but to write, publish and present on their findings using appropriate venues. Candidates for the degree are required to work in a supervised clinical setting as part of the program. Supervisors will assess candidates' strengths and needs for improvement, and each level of training gets more difficult as students progress through the experience. Upon completion of the clinical training, students should meet four primary objectives: cultural competence, relational competence, ethical practice, and effective assessment and intervention skills.

The clinical doctoral program requires 98 credit hours on a semester-based schedule, and credits are divided as follows: 69 credits of core courses, 12 credits of electives, 12 credits of practicum and seminar courses; three credits of clinical research project and two credits of professionalization group. Courses cover a broad range of topics, including social psychology, issues in the assessment and treatment of diverse populations, cognitive behavioral therapy, and the treatment and assessment of children and families. Students will also need to complete a comprehensive exam, participate in a 1- to 2-year internship of about 2,000 hours, and maintain a B average or better in order to earn the degree. Candidates have seven years to fulfill these requirements.

Students who pursue a doctoral degree through the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University will receive a thorough grounding in research and theory combined with practical, hands-on learning experiences, supervised internships in the field and classroom exercises.
