Mount Mary University is a private, nonprofit, Catholic liberal arts institution of higher learning residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is sponsored by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Mount Mary University offers more than 30 undergraduate majors, and eight master’s and doctoral degree programs. It also offers post-graduate certificate programs. The faculty to student ratio is ten to one, with an average class size of 12 to 20 students.

Mount Mary University traces its roots back to 1872, when the School Sisters of Notre Dame founded St. Mary’s Institute. In 1897, the school became St. Mary’s Academy. In 1913, the institute introduced a college curriculum and changed its name to St. Mary’s College. It was the state’s first four-year Catholic institution for women. In 1926, the college moved to Milwaukee to provide Catholic education to a wider range of students. The school was renamed Mount Mary College in 1928 and the cornerstone of the new location was started. The college officially opened its doors in 1929 to 132 young women. The college launched the nation’s first four-year merchandise management and fashion design program in 1965. The college continued to expand over the next few decades, adding more degrees and graduate programs. The college officially became Mount Mary University in 2013. Today, the university provides education to women at the undergraduate level and both men and women at the graduate level. Approximately 1,700 students currently attend the university.

Psychology and Counseling Degree Programs at Mount Mary University

Mount Mary University offers a bachelor’s degree in psychology, master’s degree in counseling, and post-graduate certificates in clinical mental health, clinical rehabilitation counseling, and school counseling. It also offers a Certificate of Completion in trauma counseling.

The bachelor’s degree in psychology focuses on the biological, cognitive, and social aspects of human behavior and mental processes. The program features a rigorous curriculum to prepare students for careers and further academic study. Students investigate an array of topics, such as human development, psychological disorders, mental processes, and biological basis of behavior. The program requires the completion of 50 credits of major courses. The core courses include introductory psychology, developmental psychology, behavioral science statistics, experimental psychology, cognitive psychology, physiological psychology, animal behavior, sensation and perception, and psychology of learning. Students also select lab-based courses and content-based courses from various options. Through the courses, students develop critical thinking, communication, problem solving, creativity, and teamwork skills.

The master’s degree in counseling features courses that prepare students to become licensed counseling professionals. Students have the ability to concentrate on one of  three areas: clinical mental health counseling, clinical rehabilitation counseling, and school counseling. The core counseling courses include professional identity and ethics, theories of counseling, techniques of counseling, behavioral science statistics and research, multicultural counseling, counseling assessment and program evaluation, group procedures in counseling, counseling across the lifespan, and career development. The clinical mental health counseling program offers specialized coursework in trauma counseling, addictions counseling and psychopharmacology. The program requires 60 credits. Students must also complete 700 on-site hours of clinical/internship experiences at certain clinical mental health practicum locations, prepare a professional counselor portfolio and self-assessment, and take a comprehensive examination. The clinical rehabilitation counseling concentration requires 60 credits including core coursework, 700 on-site hours of clinical practicum/internship experiences at clinical rehabilitation locations, preparations of professional counselor portfolio and self-assessment, and completion of a comprehensive examination. The school counseling program prepares students to work with youth in K-12 school settings and educators and administrators. The program requires 48 credits including core coursework, 600 on-site hours of internship experiences in a K-12 school setting, portfolio and self-assessment, and a comprehensive examination.
