About Northwestern State University of Louisiana

Northwestern State University of Louisiana was established in 1884 in the Bullard Mansion, located at the top of a hill overlooking the port city of Natchitoches. It began as a two-year degree school for teachers as the Louisiana State Normal School. In 1921, the school became known as the Louisiana Normal College, becoming Northwestern State College in 1944 and Northwestern State University in 1970.

The university began as a way to improve Louisiana’s ineffective public school system after the Civil War. Initially, the school was designed to train teachers that would enter the public school system and improve the education of students.

Many of the traditions at Northwestern State University of Louisiana are steeped in the school’s history. In 1923, President V.L. Roy and Coach H. Lee Prather proclaimed all athletic teams at the school to be known as the Demons after a contest which was open to all students. The winner received a prize of $10. The Alma Mater was written by Isabel Williamson who later became Mrs. S.J. Cummings, while the fight song lyrics were written by Larry Powell.

One of the most famous legends at Northwestern State University of Louisiana is that of Isabella who is said to haunt the Bullard Mansion. The only thing on campus that remains of the mansion are three columns which have been adopted as the official symbol of Northwestern. There are many stories about who Isabella actually was, but many believe she was a French maiden who lived in the mansion who allegedly met with a tragic fate inside the mansion walls. Rumor is that her ghost roams the halls and it is one of the most famous ghost stories of Natchitoches.
