With their application, students must submit the official transcripts from their previous institutions as well as a three-page personal statement and three recommendation letters from previous teachers or supervisors. Master of Arts in Counseling
The Master of Arts in Counseling degree at the University of North Dakota is designed for students who have a background in education or social work who wish to become counselors in a community role such as schools, clinics, rehabilitation agencies or family service organizations. This program provides an emphasis in counseling within a K-12 setting. The program requires candidates to complete 50 credits of core and focus courses over a period of 2.5 years, when studying full time. This program is offered in an online setting though it does require a minimum of two separate four-day visits to the Grand Forks campus in June and July.
Students will complete a variety of online programs as well as individual research. This research experience is an integral part of the program. The project usually begins early in the degree program. It requires the completion of a research product that will be completed under the direction of an academic advisor.
Students must complete ten credits of the counseling program before enrolling in the school counseling practicum. The practicum is the first of two steps in hands-on learning for each student. After the practicum is completed and successfully assessed, students will then take part in a two-semester internship at either an elementary school or secondary school. The internship is usually completed during the last year of the program. Students will work together with the School Counseling Coordinator to find a suitable placement.
When the coursework, research project, practicum and internship are successfully completed, a student will pass into the candidacy stage of the program. When they reach this stage, they can sit for the examination required for the completion of the program as well as graduation.
