Messiah College Counseling Degree Programs

A counseling degree trains people to become counselors so they can help others with a variety of life issues. A counselor works with the general population or with specialized groups of people, such as teens, soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder or someone struggling with addictions. A counseling degree will benefit someone who is interested in the following fields: school counselor, vocational counselor, marriage counselor, a mental health counselor or addiction counselor. Counselors can also work independently, for agencies and in the field of corrections. Most practicing counselors need a master's degree in order to be licensed. Each state requires specific licensing and certification in order for counselors to work although requirements differ from state to state. In addition to course curriculum, students should demonstrate maturity and a strong commitment to abiding by high standards of integrity and morals.
