To develop the ranking of Top 20 Christian Colleges for a Counseling Degree, we started by using the Institute of Education Sciences' College Navigator to gather a list of schools that offered a counseling program (or a major with a counseling emphasis) as a bachelors degree (194 programs). From this list of 194 institutions, we cross-referenced with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to keep only regionally accredited schools (160 schools). These schools were then ranked based on the following point system.
- 1 point if religious accreditation from one of the 4 National Faith-Related Accrediting Organizations (http://www.chea.org/Directories/faith.asp).
- 1 point if ranked on US News & World Reports Regional College Ranking (http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/regional-colleges).
Student to Teacher Ratio
- 2 points if under 10:1
- 1 point if under 20:1
Retention rates for first time students seeking a bachelors degree
- 2 points if over 80%
- 1 point if over 60%
- 3 points if over 75%
- 2 points if between 50% – 75%
- 1 point if between 25% – 50%
We then selected only Christian Colleges and sorted in order of points (highest to lowest). Note: Graduation rate was used as a secondary ranking after total points were assigned.
