In 1885, seven area leaders proposed the establishment of the Tempe Normal School. Hiram Bradford Farmer, John Samuel Armstrong, Charles Trumbull Hayden, Joseph Campbell, T.J. Butler, A.C. Baker and R.L. Long envisioned a school that would not only instruct people in the art of teaching, but also in mechanical arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and law. The men also envisioned a school that would educate students in “what regards the rights and duties of the citizens.”

The first class was held February 8, 1886 with 33 students in a single room on land donated by George and Martha Wilson. As the school grew, curriculum expanded and it became the Tempe State Teacher’s College in 1925. In 1928, the name was changed again to the Arizona State Teacher’s College before becoming Arizona State University in 1958.

Today, there are more than 67,500 undergraduate and 15,700 graduate students enrolled at Arizona State University. There are more than 90 degrees offered at the school and 42 percent of the students who attend are first-generation Arizona college students.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities has ranked Arizona State University the 88th best in the world and 48th best in the United States. U.S. News and World Report ranked the university as the second most innovative school in the country in the areas of academics, faculty and student life. Arizona State University Application Requirements

Arizona State University requires students to have a background in math, English, laboratory science, social science, a second language, and their choice of fine arts or career education. Current standards for each include four years of math, four years of English, three years of laboratory science split between at least three different fields, two years of social science, two years of a second language, and one year of fine arts or career education. Students who are neither in the top quarter of their class nor graduating with at least a 3.0 GPA must meet ACT or SAT score thresholds set by the school.

Admissions for transfer and graduate students differ slightly. Transfer students complete the same application process as other undergraduate students, but must also submit transcripts from any colleges or universities attended. Graduate students must already have a bachelor's degree and have maintained a B average in the last 60 semester hours of their program.

Tuition and fees at Arizona State University can vary somewhat between programs, but students can expect to spend about $12,000 a year to attend full-time. Tuition accounts for $10,710 for students attending during the 2019-2020 school year, with the remainder coming from college-specific fees and student-initiated fees like Health and Wellness, Recreation, and Student Programs.

The Bachelor of Science in Family and Human Development provides students with skills and knowledge in human development from infancy to geriatrics. The program focuses on all aspects of life, including formation, development and dissolution of family. Students are provided hands-on learning experiences through community programs and internships so that they may apply their classroom learning to real-world problems. Students develop proficiency in written communication, statistics and research methods. Graduates have demonstrated skills in communication that have led them to become leaders in their field. In addition to preparing students for positions in human development and family settings, students are also well-prepared to enter graduate level studies in order to further their success in their career.
