Boise State University is Idaho’s largest and fastest growing research university dedicated to providing graduate and undergraduate students with problem-solving skills, and a hands-on applied research experience. At Boise State University, students receive a choice of 170 academic programs, including master’s degrees in the fields of business, education, and the arts. Founded in 1932 by the Episcopal Church, Boise State was originally known as Boise Junior College. In 1965, the school was approved for four-year college status and later moved on to enter the state system of higher education in 1969 under the name Boise State College. The College became a University in 1974 and continues today with the mission of offering a wide variety of undergraduate degrees and experiences that promote student success, lifelong learning, community engagement, innovation, and creativity.

Boise State University Accreditation Details

Boise State University receives its accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities which is non-partial and applies only to the University. An NWCCU accreditation states that Boise University meets or exceeds the criteria necessary for the Institutional peer review process.

Accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities is not guaranteed for every program and degree offered; however, many of the academic programs have special certifications or endorsements. Degrees in the fields of psychology and counseling receive additional recognition from the council for accreditation of counseling and related educational programs and the council on social work education. Additionally, all the masters counseling programs are CACREP accredited.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Boise State undergraduate students attending full time and residing in the Idaho area can expect to pay around $7,354 for the year. Nonresidents will pay up to $21, 804 per year, not including books, supplies, room, and board. Graduate residents will pay $8,440, and non-residents will pay $ 22,890 annually. Psychology and Counseling Education at Boise State University

Boise State University’s department of counselor education program prepares students to work as professional counselors in private, educational, and public sectors. The graduate and undergraduate programs focus on the promotion of human development and advancing leadership through teaching, advocacy, and charity. The Masters of Arts in Counseling is designed to prepare professionals to counsel patients in a variety of settings. Students taking this academic program are required to enroll in one of two cognate areas: addiction, or school counseling, both subsets are CACREP accredited, with limited and competitive placement. This academic program targets eight key areas listed in the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). The master’s program prepares students for the process of obtaining professional counseling certification in Idaho.

The school counseling cognate focuses on preparing professionals for certification as a school counselor in Idaho. This area focuses on implementing individual, group, and classroom guidance in a school setting. Graduates who choose this field can work in a private or public school system at the elementary, middle, or high school level.

Students who choose the addiction counseling cognate will focus on an area of study that works with individuals affected by substance abuse and will focus on prevention and intervention strategies. Graduates of this program will be eligible to work in a variety of areas including private practices and community areas offering substance abuse counseling.

The counselor education and supervision (CES) cognate of the Ed.D. is a CACREP accredited program designed for doctoral students, once accepted into the program, the course consists of the following course units.

• 66 doctoral-level credits

• Out of those 66-semester credits, 12 credits must consist of research and statistics courses

• 12 credits of curriculum and instruction courses

• Nine credits are of dissertation

• One credit of comprehensive examination or activity assessment

• 32 credits in counselor education and supervision

This program was designed to train doctoral students to become leaders in their field, increase clinical skills, and gain an ability to teach masters level courses. The department currently only accepts one student every fall. Eligible students are required to complete 100 clock hours or practicum, followed by 600 clock house of internship.

The CES program is based off an apprentice model which allows for student mentoring and theoretical based assignments. Students meet with a faculty member to discuss opportunities to supervise and collaborate regarding assignments. Further plans are in the works to grow into a cohort model for this academic program.

Applicants interested in this programs must meet the following application requirements:

• A master’s degree in counselor education

• Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0

• A minimum composite score of 1000 (verbal, quantitative) on the old GRE test or a composite score of 300 (verbal, quantitative) on the new GRE test or above is strongly recommended.

• Admission is further based upon a review of the applicant’s transcripts, cover letter, complete curriculum, and three professional or academic references, as well as, an in-person or electronic interview.
