About Canisius College

Canisius College is a private college in New York. Established in 1870 by the Society of Jesuits, it maintains its affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church. It took over a small campus that the Jesuits used as a prep academy and grew significantly over the years. The urban campus now covers more than 70 square acres of land. This college is home to more than 70 clubs and organizations that offer fun opportunities for students. Those students can join clubs to watch and discuss films, write for the campus newspaper, do service learning projects or travel to other parts of the country. They can also join one of the 16 athletic teams sponsored by the college.

The college also offers more than 100 degree, certificate and minor programs for students at the bachelor's and master's levels. Some of these programs allow students to take advantage of the local partnerships that the college has and gain experience working with patients and real people. Though the campus and curriculum of Canisius College grew over the years, it's still a fairly small school with an enrollment of around 3,900 students.

Canisius College Accreditation Details

Canisius College is a regionally accredited school that has accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). MSCHE accreditation is so important because it allows students to take credits earn on another accredited campus and get credit for those classes through this school. It also gives students the right to use the FAFSA to obtain federal financial aid. Canisius has accreditation for some of its specialty degree programs too, which comes from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Canisius College Application Requirements

Though Canisius College does not charge an application fee, it does require that all students use its online application or that they request a copy of the school's paper application, which they can send through the mail. Undergrads can also use the Common Application. Prospective freshmen have until November 1 to apply for early admissions, but all other students can apply at any point during the school year. The college uses a rolling admissions policy and will accept students as long as it has room for them. No matter what application he or she submits, the student will need to provide other information also. Canisius asks for a personal essay of 200 words or more, an ACT or SAT score, a high school transcript and a form filled out by a guidance counselor or teacher.

Graduate students will need to use a different application, which is also free. This application asks students to write an essay of at least 350 words, but students have the chance to log in and out to work on that essay before adding it. A prospective student must also submit a transcript that shows the student has or will have a bachelor's degree at the time he or she starts the program. Other requirements include a copy of the student's resume and two letters of recommendation. The college will accept recommendation letters from both profession and educational references.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Though the college already ranks as a best value school, Canisius College announced in 2018 that it would further reduce tuition costs for all incoming students to make its classes more affordable. Students will now pay $27,000 a year for tuition alone, which is nearly $8,000 less than it previously charged. Adding in the cost of housing a meal plan brings the annual total up to around $39,700 for students. Graduate students pay $819 per credit hour and fees or around $140 per semester. The college also charges a wellness fee for all students taking classes on its New York campus.

Canisius College highly encourages students to fill out the FAFSA as soon as possible after deciding that they want to attend. Those students can use the code associated with the college on that form and file almost a full year before enrolling. The FAFSA is what determines whether a student will qualify for any government aid, which can include grants, loans, and acceptance into a work-study program. These all help undergrads reduce their total costs. Both graduate students and undergrads can look for external scholarships and use private loans too. There are also loans available from private lenders and for the parents and guardians of students.
