Charter Oak State College was founded in 1973 by the state legislature of Connecticut. The college focuses on providing quality education in technical fields that are either growing or already in high demand. Charter Oak State College Application Requirements
All applicants to Charter Oak State College must be at least 16 years of age or older. The applicant must also have at least nine college-level credits with an acceptable grade. Applicants can be submitted year round through the online application system. Students must submit a non-refundable $75 application fee. They must also send any and all transcripts, certifications and test scores from previous institution or education centers. These transcripts must be the official transcripts and must be sent in a sealed envelope to Charter Oak State College.

Students who choose to complete their degree online will have the privilege of paying one of the lowest tuition rates in the online sector. Charter Oak State College course credits cost $263 per credit for students who are residents of Connecticut. For students who are not a resident of Connecticut, credits will cost $346 per credit. Online Degrees Offered
Charter Oak State College offers an online degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences. Students choosing to undertake this degree will be allowed to choose from three main focuses: psychology, political science or sociology. The following information is written regarding two of these focuses: psychology and sociology.
Bachelor of Science in Applied Behavioral Sciences – Psychology Focus
Students who wish to undertake a degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences with an emphasis in psychology will be provided with a broad education in the field of psychology. This program provides a general education; however, it does not provide the requirements necessary to apply for licensure as a certified psychologist. A bachelor’s degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences with a focus in Psychology will require students to take courses in two of the following areas:
- Social Psychology
- The Study of Personality
- Abnormal Psychology
- Clinical Psychology
- Mental Health
- Community Mental Health
In addition to these credits, students will also be required to take courses from one of the following areas:
- Learning and Memory
- Experimental Psychology
- Developmental Psychology
- Systems Theory
Finally, students in this degree will also be required to take courses in experimental design and research methods. These courses will help them facilitate their capstone project during their final year of studies. All of the remaining require credits that students must take should be taken in a focused area and should all come from one of the following categories: social work, counseling, rehabilitation services.
For their focus credits to count towards their degree, students must achieve a grade of C or better in each course.
Bachelor of Science in Applied Behavioral Sciences- Sociology Focus
Students who are interested in pursuing the bachelor of science in Applied Behavioral Sciences also have the opportunity to choose to focus their studies in the field of sociology. A focus in sociology will provide a basic understanding of both the scientific and human perspective in the study of groups in both urban and rural settings. Students will have the opportunity to study the relationships and social patterns of people on both a large and small scale.
Students will be required to take core required credits in the methodology of social research, general sociological theory, and sociology. Students will also be required to complete credits that fit within one focused human services area. However, credits in social work will not be accepted for the credits in the sociology focus degree. Students will finish their degree with a capstone project that will highlight both their theoretical and research skills.
In order for their credits to be counted towards their sociology focus, students must achieve a grade of at least C or better.
The intended learning outcome for this program is to give students a general understanding of the fields of sociology, psychology or political sciences. The second intended learning outcome is to provide a general understanding of the current and relevant research methodologies in all three fields. The third intended learning outcome for students on this program is to be able to write meaningfully about their chosen course of focus whether it is psychology, sociology or political sciences. The final intended learning outcome is to teach students to identify appropriate intervention strategies. In psychology, this may mean being able to identify an intervention strategy in a public health setting. In political science or sociology, this may require the correct application of techniques within the criminal justice system.
