Eastern Virginia Medical School is a school of medicine and health professions that was founded by the community. A shortage of doctors in eastern Virginia prompted a grassroots effort in Hampton Roads, Virginia to raise money and help create a cutting-edge medical center that would attract the best and brightest doctors and research experts in the nation.
Established in 1973, the school is dedicated to graduate biomedical and health education. The EVMS campus includes the region’s only level 1 trauma medical care facility in the 555-bed Santara Norfolk General Hospital. Eastern Virginia Medical School Accreditation Details
EVMS holds accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. It is also accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

Eastern Virginia Medical School Application Requirements
The doctor of philosophy degree in clinical psychology is provided through the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology and admits approximately seven students per school year. Applicants will be chosen based on academic background, research and clinical interests and experience, a personal statement and responses to application questions, and GRE scores and letters of recommendation. Interested applicants should contact the Consortium’s admissions department for specifics on applying to the program.
EVMS also offers a Graduate Art Therapy and Counseling program, which is a unique program that has been preparing world class art therapists for work in the community for over 40 years. To apply for the Art Therapy and Counseling program, applicants will need to have completed a bachelor’s degree and all prerequisite coursework that includes 12 semester credit hours in psychology and 18 semester credit hours in Studio Art. Applicants must also have a qualifying GPA of 3.0 or higher and complete an online application with corresponding fee.
Official GRE or TOEFL scores will be considered where applicable. Prospective students must also submit three letters of recommendation, a portfolio, and a writing sample.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Total cost of attending EVMS’s Art Therapy & Counseling Program is $53,544 for in-state students and $58,341 for out-of-state students per school year.
Financial aid at EVMS includes grants, educational loans, and scholarships. Available loans include the federal William D. Ford Direct Unsubsidized loans and the Grad PLUS Loans. In addition, the Health Resources Services Administration provides funding options with Loans for Disadvantaged Students in the Doctor of Medicine program and Primary Care Loans. A limited number of EVMS institutional loans are also available.
The Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology offers numerous assistantships and scholarships to reduce tuition and presents provides each student accepted into the program enough financial aid to reduce their tuition fees to $6,000 per year. This is applicable to both in-state and out-of-state students.
Psychology and Counseling Degrees Offered at Eastern Virginia Medical School
EVMS offers a Graduate Art Therapy and Counseling Master’s degree program as well as a Clinical Psychology Doctorate program.
The Art Therapy and Counseling program is an academic program based on studio, community, reflective classroom, and clinical experience. It prepares students to combine counseling with art mediums such as sculpture and painting. Graduates of this unique program can go on to become practicing Art Therapists focused on children, adults, or a combination of both. Graduates can also focus on a career in counseling or therapy and use their art skills and training to enhance their practice.
