Eastern Virginia Medical School is a school of medicine and health professions that was founded by the community. A shortage of doctors in eastern Virginia prompted a grassroots effort in Hampton Roads, Virginia to raise money and help create a cutting-edge medical center that would attract the best and brightest doctors and research experts in the nation.
Established in 1973, the school is dedicated to graduate biomedical and health education. In addition to focusing on preparing the next generation of health providers, the school also translates health discoveries into better health care for the people in the Hampton Roads community. With a vision of becoming the most community-oriented medical school in the nation, EVMS has substantially improved the state of health care in the eastern Virginia area.
The EVMS campus includes the region’s only level 1 trauma medical care facility in the 555-bed Santara Norfolk General Hospital. The campus also houses the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, a 212-bed institution and the only children’s hospital in the state that is stand-alone. These facilities help provide real-world opportunities and experience for students at the institution.
Known for its research in pediatrics, geriatrics, diabetes, and cancer, EVMS has a number of specialty centers and institutions. These include the Center for Base Skull Surgery, The Head & Neck Cancer Center, The Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, and the Hearing Balance Center. The institution was also the first in the U.S. to use the vitro fertilization method to produce a viable fetus.
As a community resource for Hampton Roads, EVMS offers unparalleled benefits. The EVMS Medical Group’s staff of physicians take care of more than 1,000 patients on a daily basis and the institution’s research focuses on solving the region’s most common health issues. The school itself also drives more than $824 million annually to the local economy.
