Edinboro University was founded in 1857 as a private training school for teachers. It was originally known as Edinboro Academy and was named for the Pennsylvania town whose citizens paid just $200 for an acre of land and $3,200 to construct a two-story, six-room building which still stands today.

In 1861, the Edinboro Academy became the second State Normal School in Pennsylvania, changing its name to Northwest State Normal School, still dedicated to educating teachers in the state. In 1914, the state purchased the school from the original stockholders and the Edinboro name returned when the school was renamed the Edinboro State Teachers College. In 1960, with expansion of the liberal arts degree programs outside of education, the school became known as Edinboro State College. The school gained university status in 1983.

Today, Edinboro University sits on 585 acres with an additional 26-acre campus known as Porreco College, which is located in Erie, Pennsylvania. There are 6,837 students enrolled in graduate and undergraduate programs.
