Psychology and Counseling Programs at George Fox University

George Fox University appears in our ranking of the Top 25 Most Affordable Master’s Degrees in Counseling in the West.

Though GFU offers a number of degree programs, some of its more popular programs are those in counseling or psychology. The psychology department offers a BA or a BS in psychology and a BS in cognitive science. Students majoring in other fields can choose a psychology minor with a concentration in experimental psychology, counseling and clinical work or educational psychology. The educational psychology minor is best for those who want to work as guidance counselors or school psychologists. All psych students can do internships at the undergraduate level. GFU also offers a Doctor of Psychology for students with an undergraduate and master's degree.

Many of the psychology students apply to one of the university's graduate programs in counseling, though some students attend graduate school at another college. GFU has three MA programs in counseling: clinical and mental health counseling, marriage, couple and family counseling and school counseling. Students can also enroll in the educational specialist in school psychology or one of the certificate programs that award graduates a certificate rather than a degree. Certificate programs include school counseling, school psychology, and marriage, couple and family counseling. George Fox University developed its certificate programs as a way to assist students who already have an undergraduate and advanced degree and those who already work in a counseling field to gain additional experience and the education needed to move up within that field.

George Fox University is a private college in Oregon that has an affiliation with the Northwest Yearly Meetings of Friends. A group of Quakers established the school as a learning academy called Friends Pacific Academy, which opened in the 1880s. The campus became Pacific College just a few years later. It primarily offered two-year programs and was best known as a junior college. The university officially became a four-year college and began offering bachelor degree programs in the 1920s. The school later became George Fox College and then George Fox University. Fox was the leader of the Quakers in the United States during the religious groups early years.

Students entering GFU must sign a contract with the university. They agree to abstain from certain substances like illegal drugs and alcohol. Though the university accepts students from all denominations, it does ask that students attend regular religious gatherings or church services while living on campus. All students must also participate in service programs and events that help them give back to the community and those in need. Several politicians and writers attended GSU, which Forbes listed as one of America's top colleges. Kiplinger's Personal Finance also included George Fox University on its list of the private religious colleges that offer the best value for students. All students have access to financial aid packages.
