Jackson State University Application Requirements

Jackson State has different application requirements in place for each type of student. Undergrads must complete and submit the JSU online application, which allows them to create their own accounts to use on the admissions website. They must also submit an official high school transcript that shows the classes taken and grades received over the course of the last six semesters. It should also show that students followed a college prep curriculum. The university also asks for an official ACT or SAT score and immunization records from each prospective student.

Those applying to one of the JSU graduate programs must also fill out an online application. They need to submit an official transcript that shows the student either has a bachelor's degree or will have one in the near future. The transcript must also show that the student maintained a 3.0 grade point average as an undergrad. Students living outside of Mississippi need to pay a $25 application fee too. Some programs may ask for a writing sample, resume and/or letters of recommendation.

The Ph.D.in Clinical Psychology program has its own application and some different requirements. Prospective students must submit a deadline by or before the January 15 deadline. Reviewers working for the university will go over the applications and determine which students are worthy of an admissions interview. Students may go through two different interviews before learning if the university accepted them. The university may accept students outright or put them on a waiting list.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The cost of attending JSU starts at $313 per credit hour for undergrads enrolled on a part-time basis. Those taking 12 or more credit hours pay a flat rate of $3,750.50 per semester, which lets them take up to 19 credits. The cost for graduate and doctoral students is around $417 per credit hour. Full-time students can take between nine and 13 credit hours of work and pay only $3,750.50 per semester. JSU increases the cost for nonresidents to $446 per credit hour for undergrads and $595 per credit hour for graduate students. Nonresidents include any student who did not live in Mississippi for at least 12 months before enrolling.

JSU students can apply for financial aid and receive money they can use for room and board, tuition and any other costs. As soon as the university receives the FAFSA that an applicant filed, it will create a financial aid based on the overall need that the individual has. Financial aid packages vary based on the need a student demonstrates. It may include loans, grants, scholarships and acceptance to its work-study program. Students can also look at loans for their parents and alternative loans.
