Founded by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1863 as an all-male college, La Salle University has grown into a private co-educational Roman Catholic liberal arts institution rooted in the Lasallian values. Each year, La Salle enrolls more than 3,100 undergraduates and 2,700 post-graduates in nearly 60 academic areas. La Salle University is tucked into the Delaware Valley on a 133-acre urban campus in Philadelphia, America's fifth most populous city. Certain classes are held at satellite centers in Newtown and Plymouth Meeting too. La Salle maintains a low student-faculty ratio of 12:1 for individualized attention.

According to the U.S. News, La Salle is ranked the 26th best regional college and 20th top school for military veterans in the North. Forbes magazine named La Salle University the 134th best college in the Northeast and 253rd top overall private college in America. La Salle also was given a Forbes financial grade of C and included in its ranking for "Grateful Grads." Washington Monthly noted La Salle as America's 150th best master's-level "Bang for the Buck." La Salle University Accreditation Details

La Salle University is formally reviewed and accredited every 10 years by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Counseling degrees have met the standards of the Council on Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). La Salle has been approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). The Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) program is also accredited via the American Psychological Association (APA).

La Salle University Application Requirements

With an acceptance rate of 78 percent, La Salle has a selective admissions process. New undergraduate students must hold a state-approved high school diploma or GED equivalent. Academic rigor is strongly reviewed, so AP and IB courses are preferred. First-year freshmen have an average high school GPA of 3.33. Applicants must score at least 990 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT for admissions. Undergraduate transfers can be accepted from other regionally accredited schools. A maximum of 70 credits can be transferred. Transfer students must hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Graduate students wishing to attend La Salle University must have an accredited U.S. bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent. Carrying a minimum overall college GPA of 3.0 is mandated. Counseling programs specifically require applicants to have at least 15 credits in psychology, counseling, or marriage and family studies. Taking the GRE or MAT is only required for those with a GPA under 3.5. Having work experience related to the mental health field is strongly required. International students must score at least 80 (Internet-based) or 540 (paper-based) on the TOEFL.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Full-time tuition for daytime undergraduate programs will cost $20,200 per semester. Part-time learners can pay $1,265 per credit hour. Adding in a $200 student activities fee, $150 technology fee, and $100 general university fee each semester is required. At the graduate level, students in the master's counseling programs will pay $760 per credit hour. Psy.D. candidates must afford $930 per credit hour at La Salle.

La Salle University takes pride in providing 99 percent of beginning full-time students with financial aid. Students can borrow funds via the Federal Direct Loan, Federal PLUS Loan, and Federal Perkins Loan program as well as private/alternative education loans. Federal Work-Study is available to provide bi-weekly paychecks. Active duty veterans can receive benefits through the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Some may qualify for the Pell Grant, FSEOG Grant, or Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant. In-state students should apply for the PHEAA State Grant. There's also the La Salle University Grant. There are numerous scholarships, such as the Annenberg Henrich Scholarship, Maquire Scholars Award, Charlotte Newcombe Scholarship, and Common Scholarship.

Psychology and Counseling Degrees at La Salle

In the School of Arts and Sciences, La Salle University students can select from five accredited degrees related to psychology and counseling. Following the mission of the Christian Brothers, all programs provide a liberal academic experience for progressive community leadership. The academic options are:

Major in Psychology

Housed in the Wister Building, the Major in Psychology at La Salle is a four-year bachelor's program for undergraduate students seeking a sophisticated understanding on the complex factors affecting human behavior and thinking. Internships are arranged at mental health agencies across Greater Philadelphia. Majors can interact with the world's leading psychologists at the university's annual Grimes Lecture. Students can also join the Psi Chi Honor Society.

M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy

Consisting of 60 credits, the M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy program can be completed in three years full-time by graduate students seeking to treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders in a relational context. Students can select a minor in Professional Clinical Counseling or Addictions Counseling. La Salle has extensive resources on marriage and family therapy in the Connelly Library. Graduates are qualified to become licensed in Pennsylvania.

M.A. in Professional Clinical Counseling

Fully accredited by the CACREP, the M.A. in Professional Clinical Counseling helps La Salle students receive the essential skills training to receive certification from the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). The 60-credit curriculum uses a "wellness model" to produce mental health professionals who empower diverse groups to improve well-being. At least 700 hours of supervised field experience is required. Coursework will cover topics like trauma counseling, psychopathology, group processes, addictions, and systemic thinking.

M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology

La Salle's M.A. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology program prepares graduates for entering an in-demand business profession with the behavioral insights to improve employee workplace performance. Courses will explore social psychology, work motivation, human resources, organizational behavior, employee benefits, performance appraisal, and more. Students intern 12 to 16 hours per week for two academic semesters in a Philadelphia business setting. The 48-credit curriculum can be pursued full-time or part-time with evening classes.

Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology

As a five-year full-time program for students with a bachelor's degree, the Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology provides rigorous academic training to prepare psychologists capable of evidence-based practice using a cognitive-behavioral orientation. Three concentrations are available in General Practice, Child Clinical, or Clinical Health. Psy.D. students spend at least two years in the on-campus training clinic and complete a year-long clinical internship. 91 percent of La Salle University graduates pass the psychology licensing exam.
