Loyola University Maryland was founded in 1852 by a Catholic group known as the Society of Jesus. It's part of a network of 28 colleges and universities in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. The school offers degrees to around 6,000 students with about 30% of those students enrolled in graduate programs. The school is well-known for its excellent men's and women's lacrosse teams, and Loyola's sports teams play under the nickname of the Greyhounds.

The university houses its academic programs in three schools including the Sellinger School of Business and Management, the School of Education, and Loyola College, which was once known as the College of Arts and Sciences. The school is considered competitive and receives more than 10,000 applications each year, but only around 1,000 students are accepted. The school recently stopped requiring students to submit standardized test scores for application.

Loyola University Maryland Application Requirements

Loyola University Maryland is one of many schools around the country that has started offering applicants the choice of applying without submitting test scores for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT. The application requirements differ slightly depending on whether a student wishes to apply with test scores or send in an application without them.

All students must send in the following when applying for undergraduate admission:

  • Official application
  • Official high school transcript
  • Recommendation from high school counselor
  • Recommendation from high school teacher
  • Personal essay
  • $60 application fee

A student may then choose to submit SAT or ACT scores, or he or she can choose to submit an additional recommendation from a high school teacher or an extra personal essay.

Students who wish to study at the graduate level at Loyola will need to follow the instructions provided by the program to which they wish to gain admission. For example, psychology students interested in degrees like the Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology or the Master of Science in Counseling Psychology will look to the admission requirements provided by the Department of Psychology.

Required application materials include:

  • Official application
  • $60 application fee
  • Essay or personal statement
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities
  • Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Resume or CV

Students whose first language is not English must also take the TOEFL examination, and international students must complete supplemental forms if they need a visa during their study. An interview is also requested of all students who reach the final group of applicants.

Students must also agree to a criminal background check because the environments where students will spend time, such as clinical centers, schools, and hospitals, require that students have a clear background check.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Loyola University Maryland is a private school, so all students pay the same approximate fees for tuition. Tuition for full-time study at Loyola is $43,800, and the school estimates students will spend somewhere between $9,680 and $10,900 to live in a residence hall or apartment.

Other costs associated with attending Loyola as an undergraduate student include a meal plan, orientation costs, and a housing deposit fee, as well as a handful of other costs. Students in the graduate program don't pay these costs because graduate students live off campus, but they do pay tuition that depends on the student's major.

Students in a graduate psychology program will pay $835 per credit and students in the Psy.D program will pay a yearly amount that ranges from $28,562 to $30,450 a year. Students in counseling programs may see significant variances in cost from $250 a credit for Advanced Supervisory training to $1,400 per credit for a doctoral dissertation. Additionally, the school charges some extra fees for students in certain psychology and pastoral counseling programs.
