Malone University

Malone University is a liberal arts, private college that was founded in 1892. Located in Canton, Ohio, Malone University was originally a co-educational Bible institute known as Cleveland Bible College. The school continues to maintain a strong relationship with the Religious Society of Friends. The school offers bachelor’s and graduate degree programs and was ranked among the top universities and colleges in the Midwest in 2015 by U.S. News & World Report. Malone University also ranks in the top 50 most affordable Christian colleges, in the top 10 schools that offer the best online financial aid packages and in the top four percent of universities and colleges in career outcomes.

Malone University Accreditation Details

Malone University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. The Counseling and Human Development Department, which offers a number of counseling degrees at the master’s level, is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Malone University Application Requirements

Malone University offers a rolling admissions process. Prospective students must complete and sign the application for admission as well as the Community Agreement of the University. In order to apply to Malone, students with no previous university experience must submit an application as well as a $20 nonrefundable application fee. Students who submit an online application are not required to pay the fee. In addition, students are required to request an official transcript from their current or previous high school from which they graduated. All applicants must take the SAT or ACT and arrange for the results to be sent directly to Malone.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Students pursuing an undergraduate degree from Malone University will pay $29,000 in tuition, approximately $9,300 in room and board and $900 in fees for a total annual tuition rate of $39,200. Students attending on a part-time or overload basis will pay $500 per credit hour for 0.5 to 11.5 hours and for each hour that exceeds an 18-hour courseload. Students seeking a Master of Arts in Counseling degree will pay $595 per credit hour.

All students who meet Malone’s admission standards will receive some type of academic grant or scholarship, the amount of which is based solely on academic merit and not on estimated family contribution or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Any additional funds a student would receive from federal, state or local government sources would be applied in addition to his or her Malone grant or scholarship amount.

More than 90 percent of Malone students receive some type of financial aid. Students must complete the FAFSA to determine eligibility. Types of financial aid that may be available include scholarships, grants, fellowships, VISIO and a Yellow Ribbon scholarship that is specifically intended for members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Graduate students may be eligible for the Federal Stafford Loan.

Psychology and Counseling Degrees Available

Malone University offers a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology through its Department of Psychology. This major provides an educational experience that promotes interpersonal, personal and intellectual growth. Students can earn a liberal arts degree that opens the doors to a number of different careers in the field, including STEM/STEM-related occupations, positions in management and business, human resources, community services and social services. The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology also provides an excellent foundation for students who wish to pursue graduate study in pastoral ministry, counseling, psychology and related fields.

The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Malone University consists of 41 hours of psychology courses. The 41 hours of required courses include classes such as Psychological Research Methods I and II, Psychology of Human Development and Introduction to Statistics. Students must choose from either human memory and cognition or psychology of learning and take either social psychology or cultural psychology. In addition, students have the option to take an introduction to counseling and guidance, abnormal psychology or learn about the psychology of personality. Finally, topics such as neuroscience and physiological psychology, integrative approaches to psychology and Christianity and a senior seminar in psychology round out the degree.

In addition to the aforementioned course offerings, the Department of Psychology offers students a number of opportunities for independent study of advanced topics, for participation in faculty research projects and for practica in applied settings. Psychology majors are required to take at least 12 hours of electives that students must choose from 400- or 300-level psychology courses. Students may earn a cumulative maximum of 12 credits of Research Practicum, six of which may count toward the student’s graduation requirements and six of which may count toward the psychology major. Students who plan to pursue a graduate degree in psychology should consider taking as many upper-level psychology electives as they can and as their schedules permit.

In addition to an undergraduate degree, students may pursue a master’s degree from Malone University’s Counseling and Human Development Department. Graduates can choose from the following programs: Online Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Dual Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling, School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

A master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling and/or school counseling is ideal for students who are servant leaders at heart and who have a passion to help others in a meaningful way. The program is designed to conveniently fit into students’ busy professional and personal schedules. Classes are offered in eight-week sessions, and students have the opportunity to work at their own pace.

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program consists of 60 credit hours of coursework and is designed to prepare students who wish to serve as counselors in professional or agency settings. The program meets the educational requirements for professional counselor licensure in Ohio. The School Counseling program consists of 48 hours of coursework and is designed to prepare students who wish to serve as school counselors. In order to be eligible for licensure, students must also complete the specialty examination in school counseling in addition to a master’s degree.

The experienced faculty help students to establish their internship and practicum opportunities that are taken over the course of three semesters. Faculty regularly provide students with guidance and support as they work through coursework and these experiences. Malone University’s holistic approach to counseling education allows the school to graduate ethical, professional and skilled counselors who have the knowledge and ability to excel in the field. Both the School Counseling Program and the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program have high employment rates after graduation and high pass rates for licensure board exams.
