Marquette University

Marquette University began as the dream of the Most Reverend John Martin Henni who was the Catholic bishop in Milwaukee. The dream became a reality when Rev. Henni received $16,000 from Belgian businessman Guillaume Joseph DeBuey for his proposed “academy of learning.” Although the donation was not enough for Rev. Henni to establish the college, but it was enough for him to put his plan into place over the next eight years until he was able to purchase land at what is now North 10th and West State Streets.

It was another 30 years before the doors of Marquette opened as a small liberal arts school for men. The school was named for Reverend Jacques Marquette S.J., a French missionary and explorer. The first classes were held on August 28, 1881. Unfortunately, Bishop Henni died only two days later. The college was founded in and still follows the tradition of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic religious order established by St. Ignatius Loyola.

Marquette ranks in the top 100 of America’s Best Colleges according to U.S. News & World Report. The Princeton Review named Marquette one of the top 380 colleges in the United States and included the school on the 2015 Guide to Green Colleges. Kiplinger’s Personal Finance listed it one of the best values in private colleges. There are more than 8,300 undergraduate and 3,200 graduate students attending Marquette, representing more than 70 countries represented.

Marquette University Accreditation Details

Marquette University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Accreditation indicates that the college meets or exceeds criteria set forth by the accrediting agency and that it demands excellence of itself, students and faculty. Many of the programs at Marquette are also accredited by industry-specific organizations and associations.

Marquette University Admission Requirements

Students still enrolled in high school or who have not earned credits at other colleges or universities may enroll at Marquette as a freshman. Applicants must submit an application, official high school transcripts as well as ACT or SAT scores. An essay is required along with a counselor recommendation form. Students must provide a list of extracurricular activities.

Students are considered transfer students if they have completed credits at colleges or universities outside of Marquette. Transfer students must provide official transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended as well as official high school transcripts. High school transcripts are required regardless of how long it has been since the student graduated. Students who have completed fewer than 12 credits of post-secondary education must also submit ACT or SAT scores.

Graduate students must complete an online application and may be required to submit supporting documents that may include a resume, statement of purpose, writing sample or other documents as required by the program they plan to attend. Applicants must submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. At least one transcript must indicate the awarding of a bachelor’s degree or higher. GRE or GMAT scores may also be required, depending on the program chosen. Letters of recommendation may also be required.

Full-time undergraduate tuition at Marquette University is $38,000 per year. Graduate tuition is based on the program chosen as follows:

Marquette University Degree Program(s) Available

Ph.D. Counseling Psychology

The doctoral program in Counseling Psychology at Marquette University focuses on building the skills necessary to become counseling psychologists at the college level, in community mental health clinics, private practice, hospitals and other professional environments. The program is accredited by the American Psychological Association. Students engage in research in order to understand the therapy process on a deeper level as well as treatment effectiveness, normal and abnormal human development.

The program includes foundational coursework across psychology specialties. The program requires 91 credits, including 27 in Psychological Foundations, 52 in Professional Core and 12 in Research Requirements. Upon graduation, students are able to demonstrate knowledge and skills to practice psychology, contribute to psychological body of knowledge and apply a scientist-practitioner models. Students are required to complete an extensive practicum and internship program. The practicum is normally 300 hours, requiring up to six semesters to complete.

The first two semesters focus on intake and intervention skills, followed by the practicum and psychological evaluation responsibilities. Licensure requires that the student complete a pre-doctoral internship of 2000 hours in an appropriate behavioral health setting. A research component is also included in order to prepare graduates who are highly skilled at both research and practice.

Research is viewed from a developmental perspective, providing students with instruction on how to do research over time. Students begin with more elementary aspects, gradually taking on more complicated responsibilities. All courses integrate into the research component and students must complete a collaborative research project in order to complete the program. All students must complete and defend a dissertation as well.
