Located just over 20 miles from the downtown district in St. Louis, Maryville is a private college offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Approximately 8,000 students enroll each academic year. Of these, about 2,500 are traditional undergraduates while an additional 800 are adults who attend the institution either on campus or online. More than 4,600 graduate students are enrolled in the diverse master’s degree programs. While 960 of those students take classes on campus, nearly 4,000 of them are enrolled online. All 50 states and an additional 60 countries are represented in those programs.
Maryville boasts a beautiful, 130-acre campus that is dotted with natural features and includes several miles of trails. Founded in 1872, the institution was originally named the Maryville Academy of the Sacred Heart. Its focus was on servicing young women and underprivileged youth, and it was situated in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of South St. Louis. By the 1950s, the College was known as the Maryville College of the Sacred Heart, and it had relocated to its current neighborhood. Maryville became co-educational in 1968. Then, in 1991, it became a university. Several new buildings were added in the following years, and these updates continue to the present day.
Kiplinger’s named Maryville one of the best values in private colleges in 2018. Additionally, Forbes placed the institution on its list of “America’s Top Colleges” for 2017. Maryville routinely receives recognition for being military-veteran friendly. Maryville University’s accreditation by The Higher Learning Commission was reaffirmed in 2015. Additionally, it’s a long-standing member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Other accreditations are provided by organizations for particular schools or programs. The Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.
Maryville University of Saint Louis Application Requirements
Admission requirements for undergraduates include holding a high school diploma. In earning this credential, applicants must have completed a minimum of three units of mathematics, two units of social sciences, four units of English and two units of science. Completing additional units in any of these areas may help to ensure admittance. A GPA of at least 2.5 must have been maintained during high school. SAT and ACT scores are optional. They may be submitted if the student wants to enhance their chances of admission or to be considered for scholarships.
Applying involves filling out an online form and submitting an official high school transcript. If any college credits have been earned, these transcripts should be submitted too. Students who are interested in online degree programs are advised to contact the School of Adult and Online Office to get information and to schedule a consultation with an advisor.
Applicants to the Master of Arts in Rehabilitation Counseling program must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college. Transcripts from college are required as part of the application. Full acceptance to the program is available to those who maintained a GPA of at least 3.0 in prior college coursework. An application is completed online, and the package must include an admissions essay. A resume that includes two professional references is mandatory. References may be contacted prior to admission.
