Medaille College Psychology and Counseling Degree Programs

Medaille College offers one of the only Doctoral in Psychology degree programs in New York. This is a 99-credit hour program that takes five years to finish. The college expects students to spend two consecutive days working on the campus each week. Designed for those who want to work in the private or public sectors, it requires that students do 1,000 hours of supervised fieldwork. They'll also do a dissertation and work on that paper every year they're in the program. Advisers have final say over the dissertation topics that students choose.

To meet the needs of graduate students, the college now offers three graduate programs in psychology and counseling. One of those is a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy. Students learn how to help individuals, couples, families and small groups cope with the challenges they face. The program features four-week online classes and gives students time to do independent research between their classes. Students also take one class on the Buffalo campus each month. This accredited program requires that students do a 100-hour practicum over the course of 10 weeks and that they complete 500 hours of clinical work.

The two other graduate programs available through Medaille College are online programs that do not require any campus visits. One is a Master of Arts in Psychology designed for those who want to continue their education at the doctoral level. Students can take up to four courses during each session, which runs for seven weeks. The college offers a sports psychology concentration for those who want to work with athletes too. This program takes one year to complete.

Graduate students can also enroll in the college's Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. This program is available on-campus and online. The on-campus version requires that students take weekend classes. Both versions of the program take full-time students two years to finish. Students must do a supervised internship over the course of three semesters. The college allows students to work in the same positions each semester or different positions.

A Bachelor of Arts in Psychology is also available for students just starting out. The program features 45 credits of psychology classes, 44 credits of general education and liberal arts courses and 21 credits of electives. Students have the option of taking psychology electives or electives from other disciplines. Medaille College allows undergrad psychology majors to do an internship too.

About Medaille College

Located in Buffalo, New York, Medaille College is a private college that grew out of a teachers school established in the city. The Sisters of Saint Joseph opened the college in 1875 based on the principles used by normal schools opening across the country. Students enrolled in shorter programs and earned diplomas and certificates that qualified them to work as teachers. Some of its early graduates worked for schools all across the state. Its enrollment expanded significantly when the college opened its doors to Canadian students. The close proximity of its campus to the Canadian border made it easy for students in that country to get to the school. It later changed its name from Mount Saint Joseph College to Medaille College.

Medaille College expanded rapidly through the 1970s and constructed new buildings across the campus to house and educate the influx of new students. Though it continued growth over the years, enrollment at the college is still fairly low at around 1,600 undergrads and around 1,000 graduate and doctoral students.

Medaille College Accreditation Details

Though many students focus on course listings and degree requirements when looking at colleges, they should also look at the accreditation that the college has. Medaille College has accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), which is a form of regional accreditation that applies to all its programs and degrees. Students enrolled in specific degree programs and those who want to take classes from different departments will find that many programs have professional accreditation too. That type of accreditation comes from the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) and similar organizations.

Medaille College Application Requirements

The Medaille College application is available online and does not charge a fee for undergrads applying. Students will need to file the FAFSA and use the appropriate school code to apply for financial aid. The only other requirements for undergrads include an official ACT or SAT test score that comes from the testing body and an official high school transcript. This transcript should list the student's class ranking and cumulative grade point average. Optional information includes a personal statement or essay and letters of recommendation. Those letters can come from the student's peers, teachers or a guidance counselor.

Medaille also offers an application for graduate students and doctoral candidates. Those students will need to submit the online application and supply the college with an official transcript from any college attended. Many of the psychology graduate programs have additional requirements such as letters of recommendation from supervisors who oversaw the work they did. Students usually need to provide a professional resume and a goal statement too. This statement must explain the goals the student has in relation to studying psychology and what he or she wants to do with that degree. The Marriage & Family Therapy program requires a personal interview too. Students will need to meet with an admissions counselor.
