Counseling and Psychology Degrees at NWCU

The School of Liberal Arts & Bible created the Psychology Major for Northwest Christian University undergrads to study the wonders of God's greatest creation – humans. Chaired by Dr. Nani Skaggs, the 39-credit Bachelor of Science major researches correlations between the mind and behavior with at least 135 practicum hours. Each course, such as Cognition, Human Development, Psychology of Addiction, and Psychometrics, offers close professor relationships at a 14:1 student-faculty ratio. Since January 2017, Northwest Christian University has conferred a CACREP-accredited Master of Arts in Counseling designed to share God's love by therapeutic means. Headed by Dr. Elizabeth Wosley-George, this 60-credit program boasts 92 percent licensure success for treating two special populations. The Clinical Mental Health Counseling option takes 28 months of hybrid courses like Psychopathology to diagnose disorders. Northwest Christian University Accreditation Details
In Spring 2017, Northwest Christian University underwent its year seven evaluation by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) to keep its Level III accreditation under the 10th president Dr. Joseph Womack. This seven-state regional accreditor in Redmond is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to ensure quality for NWCU's 25 baccalaureate, nine adult, and 19 master's programs. The Eugene school is authorized by the Oregon State Board of Licensure Office of Degree Authorization. Specifically, the M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) through 2025.
Northwest Christian University Application Requirements
Getting acceptance letters from Northwest Christian University is considered "minimally difficult" by Peterson's despite the 68 percent admission in Fall 2016. First-year Beacons seeking the Psychology B.S. major must graduate from high school or pass equivalency exams. Cumulative unweighted GPAs in grades 9-12 must rise above 2.5. Starting the Master of Arts mandates verification of bachelor's completion, a "B" average, and minimum 297 GRE score. The School Counseling Track I applicants need teaching certification, a principal's support, and 2+ years of experience.
