Oregon State University is a research university located 90 miles south of Portland, Oregon in the town of Corvallis. Corvallis has the benefit of being only a short distance from both the Pacific Coast and the Cascades, allowing students to learn in a natural and beautiful atmosphere. While the main campus is in Corvallis, the university has other campuses or research facilities in Bend, Portland, Astoria and Newport, Oregon. Oregon State University has received several awards and accolades for its work, and the town of Corvallis has been voted as the 4th Best College City in America.

Oregon State University Application Requirements

Students who wish to apply to enter an undergraduate degree program at Oregon State University must submit a complete application. A complete application includes the completed school application accompanied by the $60 application fee, relevant transcripts and test scores.

The undergraduate admissions process encourages students to take advantage of higher learning by taking classes that unleash their potential. Students must have achieved a 3.0 GPA to be accepted into the university. The admissions board also considers a student's class rank as well as standardized test performances.

Students applying to enter graduate programs at Oregon State University must have achieved a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0. An applicant's place is considered after they have submitted transcripts, letters of intent and letters of recommendation. Admissions decisions are based on the quality of the student's prior academic work, their work experience and whether or not their research goals are in line with the faculty at the university.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate programs at Oregon State University cost a total of $280 per credit. This is inclusive of an $80 distance education fee. The College of Business, College of Engineering and computer science degrees have different tuition rates. Students applying for these programs should check with their individual colleges for exact tuition fees.

Graduate programs at Oregon State University cost $521 per credit. This is inclusive of an $80 distance education fee that is assessed per credit. Students taking on the MBA, the Ed.D Community College Leadership, the Ph.D. Counseling and the Graduate Certificate in Public Health will be assessed different tuition fees. Students should enquire with their prospective departments about the tuition for these programs.

The $80 distance education fee is inclusive of the fees required to deliver class content online. It supports the filming of course videos as well as the technology licensing fees for programs like Blackboard. It also includes the traditional registration and financial fees.

Master of Counseling School Concentration

This graduate program is comprised of 75 credits that are focused upon the field of school counseling. This program held is almost entirely online. However, there are two weekend meetings each semester in the Salem, Oregon area. This degree is designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical tools they need to become successful school counselors. However, this degree is not a substitute for teacher licensure or professional licensure.

This program is offered through the university's College of Education. It has been awarded special accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs as well as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. The third accreditation this program has been awarded is from Oregon's Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.

The main goal of this program is to not only prepare students to enter the role of school counselor but to inspire them to be successful in this role. By teaching students how to run both individual and group counseling sessions, this program hopes to develop future school leaders and spark change in schools. At the end of this program, graduates should be able to deliver a counseling program that is suitable for diverse student populations. These programs should help to increase the number of students who aspire and ultimately go to college.

The internship and practicum are completed during years two and three of the program. The first practicum will set students up for four hours per week in a school. The second practicum will put students in schools for six hours per week. To complete the internship, students must have logged 600 hours in schools over two years to graduate from the program.

If the student does not already have a teaching license, they will need to take the courses required to complete the requirements necessary for the application of the 200-hour teaching licensure.
