About Rhode Island College

As textile mills began growing throughout Blackstone Valley in Rhode Island, the need for skilled laborers also grew. In 1842, Henry Barnard was appointed the state’s first commissioner of education and he realized that educational requirements were changing. Horace Mann, who had been named Massachusett’s education commissioner, traveled to Hartford, Connecticut to meet with Mr. Barnard along with Thomas H Gallauder, an educator of the deaf. Mr. Mann was proposing a Normal School in Massachusetts, a theory derived from the French concept of ecole normale, which was designed to educate teachers. Normal Schools in the United States struggled, however, and it was not until 1845 that Rhode Island gave Mr. Barnard the authority to found such a school in Rhode Island. However, Mr. Barnard’s health had deteriorated and he had to resign his position before the school became a reality.

In 1851, Brown University created a small normal department and another normal school opened in Providence a year later. In 1854, the decision was made to open Rhode Island Normal School, but before it could open, the state legislature granted $3,000 in appropriation to make the school a state school, the first in the United States. This school eventually became Rhode Island College.

Today, Rhode Island College is located on 180 acres in the Mount Pleasant section of Providence. The college has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students.
