Rowan University

Rowan University is a public research institution of higher learning located in Glassboro, New Jersey. It is committed to offering diverse academic and creative academic experiences and services to meet the needs of all students. It offers more than 80 bachelor’s degree programs, 60 master’s degree programs, five doctoral programs, and two professional programs.

Rowan University was founded in 1923 as Glassboro Normal School, with a mission to educate teachers in the region. In 1934, the school expanded into a four year institution and it changed its name to New Jersey State Teachers College at Glassboro in 1937. The college played a major role in the special education movement in the 1930s and 1940s. In the 1950s the college expanded and it became Glassboro State College in 1958. The college continued to expand and gained university status in 1997 and officially changed its name to Rowan University. Today, Rowan University is home to nearly 20,000 students it is ranked number 90 by the U.S. News and World Report in its Top Public Schools publication.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education accredits Rowan University to grant bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees along with undergraduate and graduate certificates.

The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredits the graduate program in counseling.

Federal Work-Study Program

Rowan University participates in the Federal Work Study program where students are able to obtain both on or off campus jobs to help pay for their college related expenses. Students must demonstrate a financial need. The positions provide experience and skills that will help students in their future careers. Positions are available to both full and part-time students. Students are able to work up to 20 hours a week when classes are in session and 30 hours a week when classes are not in session. Pay varies on employer, position, qualifications of the student, and job duties.

 Psychology and Counseling Programs at Rowan University

Rowan University offers a bachelor’s degree in psychology and various graduate degree programs in psychology and counseling. The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology is intended for students seeking to understand the scientific and research basis for many areas in the psychology field. The program focuses on the scientific study of behavior and cognitive processes and requires the completion of 120 semester hours, including general education courses and major courses. The core courses include essentials of psychology, psychology as a profession and practice, psychology of scientific thinking, social psychology, developmental psychopathology, research methods in psychology, learning and behavior, lifespan development, statistics in psychology, health psychology, and physiological psychology. Students have the opportunity to gain real-world experience through field experiences in various settings, such as residential facilities for individuals with disabilities, drug/alcohol treatment centers, human services agencies, and human resources departments.

The Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling prepares students to become Licensed Professional Counselors. The program requires the completion of 60 credit hours and at least 600 hours of supervised practicum experience at approved locations. The required courses include introduction to counseling, counseling theory and techniques, research methodology and statistics in counseling psychology, group counseling and psychotherapy, psychopathology, social and cultural diversity, lifespan development, and psychopharmacology and biological bases of behavior. Students must also take the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination.

The Master of Arts in Counseling in Educational Settings prepares students to pursue careers as school counselors in K-12 settings or working in student affairs in higher education areas. The program requires the completion of 48 semester hours and an action research project. The required courses include introduction to counseling and guidance, design and administration of developmental counseling programs, group counseling in educational settings, lifespan development, applied theories of learning, multicultural counseling, and counseling interviewing skills and techniques. Students must also complete a practicum and internship in educational settings.

The Master of Arts in School Psychology is a similar program and it provides students with a background in theories and methodological procedures in psychology. The program requires the completion of 34 semester hours. The coursework includes education and psychology of exceptional learners, neurological basis of educational disorders, individual counseling procedures, group counseling in educational settings, lifespan development, psychopathology of children and adolescents, research methodology and statistics in counseling psychology, and social and cultural diversity.

The Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology features a scientist-practitioner approach and students receive personalized direction from faculty advisors in participating in top-notch original research projects. The program focuses on integrated primary care and health psychology. The program requires the completion of 108 semester hours and a one-year clinical internship. Required courses include human development, biological bases of behavior, social issues in health and wellness, multicultural perspectives, experimental foundations of behavior therapy, statistics for clinical psychology, research methods, psychopathology, health care models and service delivery, and intervention.
