Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, commonly called SIUE, is a public university residing in Edwardsville, Illinois. SIUE grants undergraduate and graduate degrees in the arts, sciences, education, nursing, health, business, human behavior, and engineering through eight schools of education: College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Dental Medicine, School of Engineering, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, Graduate School, and School of Education, Health and Human Behavior. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was founded in 1957 after a two-year campaign for the need of a public university in the area.

The Southwestern Illinois Council for Higher Education aggressively lobbied state officials to demonstrate the need for higher education. Two centers in Alton and East St. Louis were established. In 1958, the Council started a very successful private fundraising campaign to buy land for a new campus. Enrollment increased to 3,800 by 1959 and the university outgrew its current location. The Edwardsville campus officially opened in 1965. Today, SIUE is home to more than 14,000 students.

The U.S. News and World report ranks Southern Illinois University Edwardsville number 13 in its Top Public Schools publication and number 63 in its Regional Universities Midwest.

The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association regionally accredits Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville to grant bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The School Psychology Specialist Program is accredited by the National Association of School Psychologists.

Psychology and Counseling Programs at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville

Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville offers various psychology programs, such as a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, Bachelor of Science in psychology, Master of Science in clinical child and school psychology, Master of Arts in clinical psychology, and Master of Arts in industrial –organizational. It also offers a Master of Arts in art therapy counseling. The bachelor’s degrees in psychology are similar programs. They both provide students with a solid understanding of the methods used to understand behavior and mental processes. Students are prepared to enter careers in psychology or pursue advanced studies in psychology.

The programs require the completion of at least 120 credit hours. Core courses include foundations of psychology, careers in psychology, developmental psychology, research design and statistics, social psychology, cognitive psychology, and capstone seminar in psychology. The Master of Science in clinical child and school psychology includes two different tracks, the clinical child psychology track and school psychology track. Students who complete the school psychology track are prepared for specialist degree programs and certification as school psychologists. The program requires the completion of at least 40 semester hours. The core courses include advanced biopsychology, research design and inference, counseling and psychotherapy with adolescents and family, cognitive assess children and adolescents, behavioral and emotional assessment of children and adolescents, seminar in clinical child psychology-psychopathology of children, and consultation: theory and practice. Students must also complete a thesis component or research project and practicum in clinical child/school psychology. The master’s in art therapy counseling provides students with a solid understanding of the various theoretical viewpoints and practice methods. The classes are very small and experiential learning is key to the program. Students must complete at least 60 semester hours. The core courses include counseling techniques in art therapy, assessment of individuals and families, art therapy with group, family art therapy, developmental theory and art therapy, multicultural issues in art therapy, research methodology in art therapy, counseling theory and art theory, and career counseling. Students must also complete 800 hours of practicum in art therapy counseling. Graduates of the art therapy counseling program from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville are prepared to become licensed as clinical professional counselors in the state or registered art therapists with the American Art Therapy Association.
