In 1932, H.A.B. Shapiro founded the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science in an effort to provide business education in the area. The school remained small until 1961 when it became the New Hampshire College of Accounting and Commerce after its incorporation. A charter was granted by the state of New Hampshire in 1963 which allowed the school to grant degrees.

The first associate’s degrees were awarded in 1963 and the first bachelor’s degrees in 1966. In 1968, a board of trustees was appointed and the school became a non-profit institution. The name of the school was changed to the New Hampshire College in 1969. Off-campus centers were opened in order to serve adult learners who faced obstacles when it came to traditional classes. These programs were opened in Manchester, Nashua, Portsmouth and Salem as well as Brunswick, Maine. This helped the college grow rapidly, prompting a move from downtown Manchester to a 300-acre campus on the Merrimack River in 1971. A Master of Business Administration program was added in 1974 and a Human Services degrees added in 1978.

In 1981, with programs expanding rapidly, the college purchased the former Mount Saint Mary College in Hooksett, creating what was known as the North Campus. In 1988, the Human Services programs were transferred to Springfield College in Massachusetts. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the college continued to grow. In 1995, the school became a global institute of higher learning when it added an online program.

In 2001, the school gained university status and the name was changed to Southern New Hampshire University. Programs that had once been held on the North Campus were consolidated at the southern location.

Today, the school is a private, non-profit institution with 3,000 students attending on campus and over 80,000 attending online.
