Located in Louisville, KY, Spalding University is a private, liberal arts college that offers bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees. Spalding was established more than 200 years ago in 1814 by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. The Louisville campus was officially founded in 1920 as Nazareth College, and it stood on South Fourth Street at the Tompkins-Buchanan-Rankin Mansion. The college began offering a liberal arts education in 1984 and became known as Spalding University, which honors the founder of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Mother Catherine Spalding.

Today, Spalding University stands out by offering a unique educational experience for students, and several programs are designed and scheduled for working professionals. The university offers an accelerated program for adult students, too, and several programs at the college are unique to the state of Kentucky. Some of the programs that Spalding University is known for include teaching, writing, business, nursing and psychology.

Spalding University Accreditation Details

Spalding University holds accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Associated of Colleges and Schools. This allows the school to award degrees up to the doctoral level. Specific programs at Spalding University also hold accreditation including the teaching program, which is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, the social work program, which is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and the psychology program, which is accredited by the American Psychological Association.

Spalding University Application Requirements

To apply for admission to Spalding University, applicants must fill out an application for admission, which is available online, along with paying an application fee. In addition to the application, the applicant must submit an official transcript for each school that was previously attended.

First year applicants must submit high school official transcripts that include GED test scores or test scores from the ACT or SAT. These scores are not a requirement if the student has been out of school for more than five years.

Applicants who transfer to Spalding University from another institution must submit the official transcript from any college or university that they have attended previously. Test scores are not required.

Applicants who want to enter into the Adult Accelerated Program must be at least 23 years old, and they must submit their official high school transcript and any transcript from any previous college or university the applicant previously attended.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition for Spalding University $775 per credit hour with the exception of the Athletic Training program, which is $785 per credit hour, and the Health Sciences, Nursing and Occupational Therapy programs, which are $840 per credit hour. The Doctor of Psychology program has a tuition of $950 per credit hour. Housing is available on campus and are single or double occupancy. Depending on the dormitory and occupancy, the fees range from $2,700 to $3,050 per semester. There are also meal plans available, which range from $1,200 to $1,400 per semester.

Financial aid is available for students who qualify. The student must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. After applying for aid, any student who is accepted to the university will receive a detailed financial aid package based on need. Some of the financial aid available for students include grants, scholarships, work study and loans. Every year the university offers more than $4 million in financial aid and scholarships, and more than 90 percent of students at Spalding receive financial aid.

Graduate students can receive federal financial aid, but Spalding does not offer fellowships or grants to help finance the education.

Psychology Degrees at Spalding University

The School of Professional Psychology at Spalding University offers students a number of options to study the human experience and all of its complexities. The faculty is made up of professionals, and many of them are practicing licensed clinical psychologists. Faculty members teach students how to research, offer instruction in psychological theory, and show students how to apply this information in the field. Students in the psychology program at Spalding University often develop interpersonal relationships with the faculty, and see them as trusted mentors and advisors. Classes are small and scheduled in a flexible manner.

Students who are interested in the Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology can choose either a traditional or adult accelerated program. Students who enter this program will explore and learn to explain human behavior, and then apply this knowledge in the psychological field. Students who earn a BA in Psychology can choose from a number of career options or can continue their education in a graduate psychology program.

If a student chooses the accelerated format for this program, they can often complete their degree requirements on the weekends and during evening classes. The curriculum and requirements, however, are the same as the traditional program.

The School of Professional Psychology at Spalding also offers a comprehensive program, which allows students to learn a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. This program is accredited by the American Psychological Association, and it is part of the National Council of the Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology.

The curriculum in the Psy.D program will give students an overall education in general clinical psychology, and allows students to study in a number of areas. They include:

Many students in the program will combine emphasis areas to ensure that they meet the specific goals for their career. The program trans students as a Scholar-Practitioner of psychology. Faculty members are focused on ensuring that students are committed to the study of psychology, and will have a sensitivity to their clients.
