About St. Bonaventure University

St. Bonaventure University is a private university in New York that has an affiliation with the Catholic Church. Founded in 1858 as St. Bonaventure College, it gained support from the Franciscan Order, which helped it grow and thrive during its early years. The state granted it university status in 1950 due to major changes made to its curriculum. Though the university did have some financial issues in the 1990s that almost led to its closure, it recovered from those issues and continues operating today. It retains its affiliation with the Catholic Church but welcomes students of other denominations and backgrounds.

SBU has a strong reputation for its writing programs, which produced a number of Pulitzer Prize-winning authors. Other graduates wrote popular fiction and nonfiction books. Some of the organizations on its campus allow students to give back and to help others. These organizations send students to help out after natural disasters and in other emergency situations. In addition to bachelor's and graduate programs, the university now offers some combined programs that allow students to earn two degrees in only five years. Enrollment at St. Bonaventure University now includes more than 1,700 undergrads and around 500 graduate students.
