Founded in 1869, St. Cloud State University (SCSU) is located in St. Cloud, Minnesota. SCSU is one of the largest schools in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. St. Cloud is a regional comprehensive university that has nearly 110,000 alumni and more than 15,400 students. Students can choose from more than 200 pre-professional programs, minors and majors in six schools and colleges. St. Cloud State University Application Requirements

Undergraduate applicants must submit a completed application as well as an official high school transcript. Undergraduates must also send their SAT and/or ACT scores and pay the $20 application fee. Graduate students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and, depending on the specific degree pursued, submit a current resume listing volunteer involvements, professional experience and educational background. A personal statement that includes professional goals, background information, statement of interest and challenges and strengths in seeking a graduate degree may also be required. Students may also be required to take and pass the graduate admissions test.

Tuition and Financial Aid

In-state students can expect to pay $4,114 per semester or $8,228 per year for undergraduate tuition excluding books, supplies and housing. Non-Minnesota residents can expect to pay anywhere from $4,902 to $8,231 per semester or $9,804 to $16,462 per year. Graduate tuition costs hover around $3,869 per semester and $7,738 per year excluding housing, books and supplies for Minnesota residents. Non-resident graduate students are charged $5,661 per semester or $11,322 for their degrees. St. Cloud State University offers a number of forms of financial aid for eligible students, including state and federal loans, grants and scholarships.

Psychology and Counseling Degrees Available

Students may earn an undergraduate degree in psychology, where they will scientifically study human behavior to learn why humans behave the way they do and how they can apply that knowledge in their careers. The coursework within the 41-credit-hour Bachelor of Arts in Psychology gives students perspectives on mental disorders, human development, emotion, thinking and personality. Through field work, laboratory work and classroom learning, students will develop research, communication and critical thinking skills that are applicable in many fields such as international relations, business, health and education. Students are prepared not only for a wide variety of careers that value the analytical skills and knowledge of the psychology degree but also for graduate school in psychology or related fields.

St. Cloud State University offers a Master of Science in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. This program prepares students to find solutions in the workplace. They will learn to use psychological principles to improve the quality of work life and productivity of employees within an organization, and students will learn how to apply psychological principles in order to understand behavior. In addition, students will study a number of psychological techniques and theories that they can use in the selecting, training and evaluating of employees. Students are required to complete 41 credits to earn this degree, and they can choose from either a thesis or a portfolio project to submit prior to graduation. Students are prepared for careers as leadership development coordinators, organizational relations associates, psychometricians, staffing and recruiting coordinators, human resource managers, talent managers and research associates.

The Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares students to be an ethical, competent and culturally responsive counselor. The program also prepares students to work with a trauma-informed lens with organizations, groups, families or individuals. In their final semester, students are eligible to take the National Counseling Exam. The 61-credit-hour program includes either a thesis or a comprehensive exam prior to graduation, and the degree is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Students are prepared for careers in crisis clinics, schools, correctional centers, private practices and community mental health centers.

Students who pursue a Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy are prepared to provide clinical services to families, couples and individuals. Students will acquire the disposition, skills and knowledge necessary to improve the quality of well-being for clients that is empirically validated and based on theory. Graduates have gone on to complete doctoral studies or serve wider social systems within multicultural and diverse settings. All classes include an experiential curricular component, and the degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education. In addition, graduates may be eligible to seek licensure from the Minnesota Board of Marriage and Family Therapy. The 52- to 50-credit-hour program includes either a comprehensive examination or a thesis before students are granted their degrees.

A Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling prepares students to help people with disabilities achieve their independence, career, social and personal goals. Students will develop the professional skills, attitude, knowledge and understanding necessary to help groups and people with disabilities in achieving their maximum level of functioning and independence. The department offers three graduate assistantships, and the degree is designed for part-time or full-time students. Graduates have the education required to sit for the Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Rehabilitation Counselor exams, and students who take an additional 12 credits are eligible to sit for the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor exam. The 60- to 63-credit-hour program includes either a thesis or comprehensive examination, and the program is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education. The Master of Science. in Rehabilitation Counseling is one of the oldest accredited programs at SCSU.

Students who wish to help students reach their maximum level of development may benefit from a Master of Science in School Counseling degree. Students will learn in a program that embraces a developmental and multicultural philosophy in preparing them to provide counseling services in a pluralistic and democratic society. Upon completion of the program, graduates are eligible to seek K-12 licensure as a school counselor in Minnesota. The Master of Science in School Counseling program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. The 52- to 58-credit-hour program at St. Cloud State University prepares students for work as private and public school counselors, and students participate in national, state and local conferences and professional committee work.
