St. John’s University Psychology & Counseling Degrees
The psychology and counseling programs that St. John’s University offers are available for undergrad and graduate students. Many students enroll in the university’s Bachelor Arts in Psychology to learn more about the subject before going on with their studies. This program requires that students complete 126 credits of general education classes, electives and psychology courses. At least 41 of those credits will come from required psychology courses like History and Systems of Psychology, Theories of Personality, Child Psychology and Cognitive Psychology.
Graduate students can enroll in the Master of Arts program in either Psychology or School Psychology, which is a type of counseling program designed for guidance and career counselors. The general psychology program is available for those who want to do a thesis and as a non-thesis option. Students take courses in Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Personality Psychology. Though its school psychology program features some of the same courses, this program also has a bilingual track available that allows students to communicate with others in two different languages.
The university offers two doctoral programs for psychology and counseling students too. One is a school psychology program, which is available as a general program, a bilingual program or an advanced standing program. The advanced standing option is only open to those with school counseling and/or teaching experience. Students will need to pass a comprehensive exam, do a dissertation and take all required courses. There is a year-long internship requirement too. The university has a clinical psychology doctoral program open to students who want to practice in the field also. St. John’s University added a new forensic psychology certificate program that is also open to graduate students.

About St. John’s University
St. John’s University is one of the only Roman Catholic colleges located in New York City. Founded in 1870, it opened with a small campus in Brooklyn that operated under the guidance of the Congregation of the Mission. The college initially accepted students living in poverty and those from underprivileged backgrounds and provided those students with opportunities not available anywhere else. It also offered a high school program during its early years, and that program later took over the old campus when the college moved to a new location. With an enrollment of more than 21,000 students, it ranks as one of the largest private colleges in and around New York City and one of the largest in the state.
The college now offers a variety of majors for students that allow them to study both the arts and the sciences. Even its Bachelor of Arts program requires that students take some science and research classes. The college has a good reputation for some of the graduate programs that it offers, which includes two options at the graduate level and two options at the doctoral level for psychology students. The Princeton Review named St. John’s University one of the top colleges in the northeast region of the United States. Some of its traditional and online degree programs rank highly too.

St. John’s University Application Requirements
Undergrads have the option of using either the application that St. John’s University offers or the Common Application. Those who use the Common Application can create one account and apply to any colleges they may want to attend with that account. Th university has an early admissions deadline available for priority students who want to apply earlier in the year. Undergrads will need to fill out the application and submit a high school transcript and either an ACT or SAT test score.
The application process for graduate students is slightly different. These students must either have or will have a bachelor’s degree at the time that they start the program. This degree must come from an accredited college or university too. St. John’s also asks for a transcript that shows the student maintained a grade point average of at least 3.0 and a score from the GRE. Graduate students must also provide three letters of recommendation, and at least one of those letters must come from someone familiar with the student’s research abilities. A goals statement and a research or lab paper are other requirements for graduate students.
Doctoral candidates must have both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in either psychology or one of the other social sciences. The university asks these students to submit transcripts from all the schools they attended and to provide letters of recommendation too. Students may need to submit a resume, writing sample and/or a goals statement too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
St. John’s University charges undergrads a tuition rate of around $1,300 per credit hour, which comes out to around $19,000 a semester or $38,000 a year. Psychology graduate students pay a rate of a little less than $1,300 a credit, and doctoral students pay $1,440 per credit hour. The university charges all students the same rate and does not offer a discount for New York residents. Both graduate and doctoral students can apply for assistant positions on the NYC campus. Those students receive a stipend that covers some of their annual costs and a scholarship that covers their tuition. Both research and teaching positions are available.
All other students can use the FAFSA to see if they qualify for one of the aid packages awarded by the university each year. Undergrads can expect aid packages that include both subsidized student loans and grants. Subsidized loans do not incur interest until the student leaves college for a period of at least six months. Undergrads can also take part in the St. John’s work-study program. All students can use private student loans to pay their costs. The parents and guardians of college students can apply for their own loans too.
