About Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi opened in 1947 as the University of Corpus Christi. Founded by the Baptist Church, it retained an affiliation with that religious institution until becoming a state school. After the state took over its operations in 1973, it served as Texas A&I University at Corpus Christi and Corpus Christi State University. It adopted its current name after becoming part of the Texas A&M University School System. Also known as TAMUCC and A&M-Corpus Christi, its campus sits on Ward Island in Corpus Christi.

Despite being one of the smaller campuses in that system, the university offers more than 30 degree programs for undergrads and more than 20 programs for graduate and doctoral students. Those programs are available through one of its five colleges: the College of Business, College of Nursing, College of Education and Human Development, College of Liberal Arts and College of Science and Engineering. It ranks on multiple lists as one of the best colleges for students interested in research programs and ranks among the top colleges in Texas. Nearly 12,000 students take classes at TAMUCC every year, and the majority of those students live on or near the campus.
