The University of Denver is one of the country’s oldest private institutions within the Rocky Mountain vicinity. University of Denver Accreditation Details

The University of Denver is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. This regional accrediting body is recognized by the United States federal government and is the highest standard set forth for all academic universities in the country. This designation requires that all universities adhere to their academic mission, develop a sound learning strategy, utilize their resources, provide effective teaching, integrate assessment processes into the learning curriculum, maintain involvement within the community and promote student achievement.

In addition, the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Professional Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association. This organization provides continuing education for all psychologists and promotes adherence to professional development programs and opportunities.

University of Denver Application Requirements

For any prospective undergraduate students, the University of Denver provides ample opportunity to learn, grow and succeed both in and outside the classroom. Traditional classroom learning transcends into field work opportunities, lab experiences and study abroad possibilities.

Prospective undergraduate students have the opportunity to apply for one of the many undergraduate programs offered through the University of Denver, the Colorado Women’s College or the University College. The University of Denver features small, mixed class opportunities, while the Women’s College is a learning institution set forth for women only. The University College is an online learning platform that allows students to carry on their daily work responsibilities while attending online classes – thus offering them the freedom and flexibility to learn on their own accord.

For prospective undergraduate students seeking admission into the University of Denver, the admissions process extends well beyond your traditional grade point average. The University seeks students who are committed to higher learning and accelerating their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual growth. Students are invited to submit an application - either a pioneer application or a common application – by November 1st for early action. The regular submission deadline for all applications is January 15th. Applications that are received after January 15th are considered on a case by case basis, where space is available.

All completed applications – both pioneer and common – should include the following:

• An essay (as described in the application form)
• A $65 non-refundable fee for submission – this can be made via check, money order or through a convenient online system
• Official school transcripts or official verification of a high school diploma (GED)
• Official results of SAT or ACT exam
• One counselor recommendation (required)
• One teacher recommendation (optional)

For students applying for early decision (meaning that if accepted, they are committed to attending the University), they are required to also submit an early decision agreement form. Adult students who are applying for undergraduate admission must use the common application and submit a letter of recommendation from their employer if they have been out of college or high school for three years or more. Students who have been home-schooled must submit a recommendation letter from a person outside of their family (pastors, former employers, members of the church community, etc).

For graduate students seeking entry into the Counseling and Psychology program, the application process is similar. The first priority deadline for the Master’s in Counseling program is December 1st. The second priority deadline is January 15th. For those applying to the PhD in Counseling Psychology program, the deadline is December 1st. It is recommended that students apply for either program as early as possible for entry.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Annual tuition for both undergraduate and graduate students attending the University of Denver is $43,164. With room and board included, the total cost is estimated to be approximately $55,880. The average cost, per credit, is $1,119. Since the University is a private institution, tuition rates are the same for both in-state and out-of-state students.

The University of Denver offers financial aid for both undergraduate and graduate students. In fact, close to 84% of students attending the University receives some sort of financial aid. Financial aid is available to students in the form of grants, loans, student employment and scholarships. In order to apply for financial aid, you must first submit a completed application to the University. Once you are accepted into the University, you can then complete your CSS profile, request a federal loan ID and complete your FAFSA form online.

Financial aid offers require that students be enrolled in the University at least four credit hours per semester.

University of Denver’s Counseling Psychology Program

The University’s Counseling Psychology department is truly unlike any other. Two programs are offered, including a Master’s in Counseling and a PhD in Counseling Psychology. Graduate students embarking on either track develop the skills necessary to become successful researchers, clinicians and leaders in the field.

The Master’s in Counseling program allows students to select from one of four primary tracks– General Counseling, School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Research. In each of the concentrations, students are challenged academically; receiving classroom knowledge and real-world clinical counseling experience. The Master’s program typically takes about 2-3 years to complete.

The PhD in Counseling Psychology program aims to further educate counseling psychologists who have some real world experience to make them more robust in their practice. The program takes about 4-7 years to complete and requires that incoming Master’s degree candidates have at least 90 completed credit hours, two completed practica, a supervised internship, completed exams and a dissertation.

The programs are both accredited by the American Psychological Association and set the standard for social, academic and emotional enrichment in the areas of mental health care and counseling.
