Counseling and Psychology Programs

The University of Evansville appears in our ranking of the Top 25 Small Colleges for a Counseling Degree.

Though the University of Evansville does not offer any counseling programs, it does offer two undergrad psychology programs that can prepare students for entering a graduate program later. Students can declare a major in psychology and earn either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science. Both programs focus on the behaviors and interactions that individuals have with others and with the environment around them.

The University of Evansville program is unique because it offers a number of concentrations at the undergrad level. Students can choose a concentration in clinical psychology to learn more about working with patients and handling tasks in a clinical setting, but those who pick a concentration in forensic psychology will learn more about working with criminals and handling investigations. This concentration is also suitable for students who want to attend law school. The industrial business psychology concentration is best for those who want to study industrial and organizational psychology at the graduate level and those who want to earn a Master of Business Administration degree later. The university also offers a clinical social work concentration for those who want to work in private and public organizations.

All University of Evansville psychology majors have the chance to do their own research projects and work in clinical labs. They also have access to a full catalog that includes both required classes and electives. Most of these classes are worth three credits each, including Applied Creativity and Design Thinking, Industrial Psychology, Abnormal Psychology and Psychology and the Law.

About University of Evansville

The University of Evansville is a private institution of higher learning named after the surrounding city. Established in 1854 as the Moores Hill Male and Female Collegiate Institute, it was one of the first colleges in Indiana and the Midwest that accepted both male and female students equally. Though the college was in the small town of Moores Hill, financial issues and a fire led to the college closing its doors and reopening in Evansville. Called Evansville College for many years, it was the main college in the area. Its enrollment slowly grew to include students who came from outside of Indiana over the years.

U.S. News and World Report ranks the University of Evansville within the top 10 of Midwestern colleges. Also called UE, it appeared on the Forbes list of the top colleges in the nation too. The university now divides itself into four separate colleges that each house different departments. Its William L. Ridgway College of Arts and Sciences oversees its Department of Psychology. Though enrollment at the university grew over the last few decades, it still retains its smaller feel with a total enrollment of right around 2,500 students. UE has an affiliation with the United Methodist Church too.

University of Evansville Accreditation Details

UE has specialty accreditation from a number of different organizations, including the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Undergrads who want to transfer credits they earned through a high school program can do so because the university also has regional accreditation. That accreditation comes from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). As the United States Department of Education recognizes NCACS accreditation, students can also apply for financial aid to attend UE.

University of Evansville Application Requirements

The University of Evansville wants students to feel comfortable applying, which is why it offers so many ways for students to learn more about its campus. It hosts open houses throughout the year that let students take campus tours and meet with current students. They can also sign up for a program and customize the tour based on their interests needs. The university can arrange for students to sit in on campus and even spend the night in one of its residence halls.

Students applying to the university must submit transcripts that show they completed a college prep high school program. They must take four English classes and three math and social science and lab science classes. UE recommends that students take two years of a foreign language and four years of math classes too. Certain programs require that students take a Chemistry class also. Those who took IB or AP classes in high school can fill out a form and find out how many credits the university will award them for those courses.

The early action deadline that UE has in place is December 1. Those who apply by this deadline will receive an answer from the university and find out what scholarships they qualify for by December 15. All other students can apply the following year. UE also requires an admissions essay and an official test score. The essay must be between 250 and 500 words and answer one of the prompts or questions listed on the application. Tuition and Financial Aid

All undergrads who attend UE pay the same rate as a full-time student. They pay $34,300 a year, which allows them to take 12 credits up to 18 credits in both the fall and spring semesters. Students also pay fees of around $1,100 a year. The university charges more than $12,000 a year for room and board, but only those who live on the Evansville campus pay this rate. UE students typically pay more than $2,000 a year for their textbooks and other expenses too.

When a student receives aid, the university will automatically apply the funds they get to their student accounts. Any student who has a credit can visit the bursar's office and receive a check for the balance. Those who complete the FAFSA may receive loans and grants. While they do not pay back any grants, they'll pay back their student loans after they graduate. UE offers a variety of scholarships too. Its Legacy Scholarship goes to any student who has a parent or grandparent who graduated from the university, while its Scouting scholarships go to students who participated in Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts.
