University of Louisiana at Monroe

The University of Louisiana at Monroe has grown from a junior college to a comprehensive institution offering both graduate and undergraduate degrees. The university opened in Brown Hall in 1931 as Ouachita Parish Junior College as part of the parish school system. In 1934, Louisiana State University received permission from state legislature to operate the facilities as the Northeast Center of Louisiana State University.

In 1939, the name of the school was once again changed, this time to the Northeast Junior College of Louisiana State University. The following year, lands connected with the Northeast Junior College were transferred to Louisiana State University by act of state legislature.

Expansion of the school was approved in 1950 to allow the granting of academic degrees. At that time, the institution became the Northeast Louisiana State College and the State Board of Education took control of the school. The school gained university status in 1970.

The University of Louisiana at Monroe is a Tier One regional university and is ranked 81st in the South by U.S. News and World Report.

Today, more than 8,800 students are enrolled at the University of Louisiana at Monroe and each year, enrollment continues to grow.

University of Louisiana at Monroe Application Requirements

Beginning freshman and high school students who wish to attend the University of Louisiana at Monroe must have a 2.35 minimum overall high school GPA, have a minimum ACT score of 18 in English, 19 in mathematics or SAT minimum scores of 450 in English and 460 or higher in math. Adult learners who have never attended college must have a high school diploma and require no more than one developmental course. Transfer students who wish to enter the University of Louisiana at Monroe must supply official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended.

Graduate students who wish to apply to the university must provide official transcripts from every college or university attended, one of which must indicate that a bachelor’s degree or higher has been awarded. Students must provide official GRE results with a converted score of 750 or GMA results of 450 or higher.

University of Louisiana at Monroe Tuition and Financial Aid

Undergraduate tuition for both residents and non-residents are $506.50 per credit hour. Non-residents are required to pay fees if they are taking seven credit hours or more. Those fees range from $3,086 to $5,286 per semester, depending on the number of credits taken. Graduate tuition rates are $590.50 per credit hour for both residents and non-residents. The non-resident fees for four credit hours and above range from $2,353 to $5,286 depending on the number of credits taken.

Financial aid is available through grants, loans and employment. In order to qualify for financial aid, students must complete the Free Application for Federal student Aid (FAFSA). In order to remain qualified for financial aid, undergraduate students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 and graduate students a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students must also complete 67 percent of all hours attempted.

Master of Science in Counseling

The Master of Science in Counseling degree program at the University of Louisiana at Monroe allows students to concentrate their studies in School Counseling. Students are provided the skills and knowledge to work in school settings as a counselor. Classes are held completely online, but students are required to attend a one-week residency program prior to beginning their second week in the program. Some courses may require students to check in weekly via video/audio services. Practicum and internship students are required to log in for weekly supervision sessions as well. The program is 60 credit hours and full-time students can complete the program in two years.

In order to be accepted into the Master of Science in Counseling program, students must have a minimum combined score of 900 on the GRE, a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and a minimum formula score of 1490 ((400*GPA)+GRE). Students must complete the Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Counseling Form as well as a Personal Statements Form and Graduate Assistantship Application if they are seeking to become a Graduate Assistant. Students must provide three recommendations and will be required to meet with their major professor to plan their coursework.
