The University of Louisville is a state supported research university initially established in 1798. Although the school has gone through many incarnations over the centuries and decades, it served as a municipally supported public institution before officially joining the university system in 1970. With three campuses spread over more than 500 acres, the University of Louisville routinely serves more than 22,000 students throughout its various academic programs. Offerings include more than 170 degree programs across 12 different schools and colleges, ranging in level from associate to doctoral degrees.

University of Louisville Accreditation Details

The University of Louisville is fully accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACSCOC). This overall accreditation covers all of the degree and professional programs offered by the university. The various psychology and counseling degree programs offered here are additionally accredited by either the American Psychological Association, for courses offered with the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, or the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), for courses offered within the College of Education and Human Development.

University of Louisville Application Requirements

Application and admission requirements vary based on the situation of the student applying. Students seeking to enter the university as first time freshmen or as transfer students who have earned less than 24 credit hours in college coursework must complete the online application for undergraduate admission, provide official high school transcripts that include the date of graduation, and submit either ACT or SAT test scores. An application fee of $50 also applies. Transfer students with more than 24 credit hours earned in college coursework must submit transcripts from all college attended prior to the University of Louisville in lieu of high school transcripts and test scores. The online application and fee are also still required.

Students seeking admission at the graduate level must also complete an online application and submit an application fee of $60. In most cases, tests scores for the Graduate Record Examination, or GRE are required, along with all transcripts from colleges attended previously, including proof of earning an undergraduate degree. In addition, admissions for graduate level studies should include at least two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the prospective student’s academic work.

Tuition and Financial Aid

As with most colleges and universities, tuition rates are dependent on the degree level sought and the nature of the courses undertaken. Undergraduate, non-online courses for in-state residents cost $462.00 per hour, capped at $5534.00 for a full-time schedule of 12 credit hours or more. Out-of-state residents pay $1088.00 per credit hour for the same courses, capped at $13,045.00 when reaching 12 or more credit hours.

Graduate level courses are charged at $681.00 per credit hour for in-state residents and $1,417.00 per credit hour for out-of-state residents. A graduate course load is considered to be full-time at nine or more credit hours, so tuition caps at $6,123.00 for residents and $12,743.00 for non-resident graduate students. Online tuition is charged at the same rates regardless of student residency, with undergraduate courses costing $497.00 per credit hour and graduate courses charged at $714.00 per credit hour.

For students needing assistance paying or college coursework, the University of Louisville offers a variety of financial aid options, including scholarships, grants and loans. The first step to determining eligibility for financial aid is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Psychology and Counseling Psychology Degrees

The University of Louisville offers three undergraduate degrees in the field of psychology, two Bachelor of Arts degrees and one Bachelor of Science degree, within its Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences. Students can also choose a minor in psychology within this department. The most common undergraduate degree within this field is the Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in the Social Sciences. This is also the degree that is the most similar to psychology degree programs at other institutions. It provides a broad basis in social and behavioral sciences.

The Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Natural Sciences is designed to work best for students with a lot of pre-existing credits in the natural sciences field and who wish to focus on the biological and mathematical context for studies in psychology. The Bachelor of Science degree in psychology is meant for students who intend to pursue careers in the health or science fields. It includes most of the pre-med requirements for students intending to go that route. Each of these three undergraduate degree programs share the same fundamental course requirements and are then tailored to particular student interests.

At the graduate level within the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, students can seek a doctoral degree in clinical psychology following completion of an undergraduate degree. This particular department does not offer a terminal Masters level degree, but rather combines all graduate work toward achieving the PhD. This degree combines department core courses in such subjects as Behavioral Neurosciences and Advanced Social Psychology with clinical core courses such as Interventions, Legal and Ethical, and a Clinical Practicum. Admission to the program requires GRE subscores in the top 60% percentile, an undergraduate degree in Psychology with an average GPA of 3.0 or higher, several strong letters of recommendation, and experience in a research lab. The program only accepts new applicants for the Fall semester each year.

Alternately, students within the College of Education and Human Development can seek a Masters of Education degree in Counseling and Personnel Services with a concentration in Counseling Psychology. This degree program fulfills state board of psychology’s educational requirements for students wishing to take the exam to become a Psychological Associate. The program involves both classroom and clinical experiences, including at least one practicum in counseling psychology.

Whatever degree program you choose, becoming a Louisville Cardinal can open the door to experiencing the rich cultural heritage of the area as well as to gaining a valuable educational experience.
