The University of Saint Joseph is a private, Roman Catholic institution of higher learning in West Hartford, Connecticut. It is committed to providing a welcoming community that features challenging academic programs and personalized attention to help students increase their potential and succeed and make a difference in today’s society. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees through its five schools of education: School of Education, School of Health and Natural Sciences, School of Pharmacy, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and School of Graduate and Professional Studies. It offers more than 26 majors and pre-professional areas of study as well as accelerated bachelor’s to master’s degree programs. The average class size is 14 students and the student to faculty ratio is 11 to one.
The University of Saint Joseph was founded in 1932 by the Sisters of Mercy as the first liberal arts college for women in the area. The curriculum balanced liberal arts with professional studies and the programs focused on service to others guided by the Catholic tradition. The university thrived throughout its history and today is recognized for its excellent programs that prepare individuals to serve their communities in meaningful ways.

Federal Work-Study Program
The U.S. government funds the Federal Work Study for individuals who show financial need. The program enables students to work on a part-time basis to earn money for higher education related expenses. Both on and off campus positions are available and students are paid on a biweekly basis. The actual pay varies on employer, job title, job responsibilities, and qualifications of the student, but under the program requirements pay must be at least the current minimum wage.

Psychology and Counseling Programs at the University of Saint Joseph
The University of Saint Joseph offers various psychology and counseling programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program features personalized advising and mentoring from experienced instructors. The program focuses on a variety of topics including clinical psychology, behavior analysis, forensic psychology, social psychology, gerontology, psychology of women, and neuroscience. Students must complete 35 credit hours to graduate from the program. Students who have excelled in the program may be invited to enroll in any three-level graduate course in counseling or marriage and family therapy to transfer into the accelerated BA to MA program in clinical mental health counseling or school counseling.
The Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is dedicated to preparing students to pursue leadership roles and address mental health needs of individuals of all ages. The program features a holistic approach that incorporates the mind, body, and spirit. Students learn to design interventions that address an array of issues. The degree requires the completion of 60 credits, including foundation courses, counseling prevention and intervention courses, specialized courses, and practicum and internship components. The counseling courses include counseling families, psychopharmacology, theories of counseling and psychology, skills and techniques in counseling, developmental theories and applications, and crisis, trauma theory and counseling. All students must complete a 100-hour practicum and a 600-hour internship. A comprehensive examination is also required.
The School Counseling MA is dedicated to educating individuals seeking to provide leadership in school environments. Individuals in the program learn an array of counseling theories and methods to help children in a variety of educational domains. The program requires the completion of 60 credit hours. The core courses include counseling children and adolescents, group process and dynamics, skills and techniques in counseling, substance abuse and dependence, developmental theories and applications, and theoretical and practical sources for career development. Students must complete a 100-hour practicum and 600-hour internship and pass a comprehensive exam.
