The University of Scranton was founded as Saint Thomas College by the first Bishop of Scranton, Most Reverend William G. O’Hara, D.D. It had been his dream to create an opportunity for higher education in the area and, in 1888, with limited funding, he blessed a block of granite as the cornerstone for the new school. Originally, the school faculty consisted of diocesan priests and seminarians. In 1896, the Xaverian Brothers took over the operation of the school, but in 1897, the school was operated by the Christian Brothers. The school was renamed the University of Scranton in 1938. In late 1942, Most Reverend William Havey, D.D. and 19 Jesuits arrived on campus to take over the college.
Under the Jesuits, the school was restructured with an emphasis on liberal arts, a foundation in Jesuit education. Under their leadership, the school grew from primarily a commuter school to a comprehensive university. The school focuses on a tradition of excellence that is rooted in spiritual vision. Students are encouraged to seek answers and develop not only personally but professionally as well.

The University of Scranton is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. This indicates that the school meets or exceeds criteria set forth by the agency that indicates to parents, future employers and students that they are receiving the highest education possible and that the school strives to correct any areas identified as needing improvement. University of Scranton Application Requirements
Students who will soon or have recently graduated from high school and have no college credit are entered into University of Scranton as freshmen. Students must complete the Common Application and submit official high school transcripts. Official ACT/SAT scores must also be submitted along with letters for recommendation from a guidance counselor and teacher. Students may provide a list of extracurricular activities although that is not required.
Students who have earned college credit beyond high school graduation are transfer students at the University of Scranton. Students with 30 or fewer credits must submit official SAT or ACT scores along with an official transcript. All transfer students must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. A letter of recommendation is required from a counselor, professor or teacher. Students must submit a personal statement and provide a Dean of Student’s Certification and Recommendation Form.
Graduate admissions can vary depending on the program the student wants to enter. All students must provide official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. One transcript must display the conferring of a bachelor’s degree or higher. Students may also be required to submit letters of recommendation and resumes as well as portfolios of work.
University of Scranton Tuition and Financial Aid
Full-time undergraduate tuition at the University of Scranton is $42,910 and part-time tuition is $896 per credit hour. Graduate student tuition is $965 per credit hour, although the Doctor of Nursing Practice is $772 per credit hour and the graduate counseling program is $757 per credit hour.
Financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and work-study. The University of Scranton accepts VA benefits and employer-funded tuition as well. Students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to qualify for any assistance. During the 2017-18 school year, students received more than $30 million in financial aid with over $20 million provided by the university. Of the first-year students enrolled that year, 95 percent were offered funding from need-based grants and scholarships. The average financial aid package, not including parent and private loans, was $30,650.

Counseling and Human Services, Bachelor of Science
The Bachelor of Science in Counseling and Human Services degree at the University of Scranton prepares students for professions designed to help others. The program is experiential and provides students with an understanding of helping people from diverse backgrounds. Students gain an understanding of human development across the lifespan and how to maximize human adjustment with tactful intervention. Students learn to provide compassionate, thoughtful counsel through hands-on experiences. Students also develop strong written and oral communication skills. Counseling and Human Services, Rehabilitation Services Concentration
The University of Scranton offers a Bachelor of Science in Counseling and Human Services with a concentration in rehabilitation services. The program trains field-ready professionals to work in rehabilitation centers with patients who may be suffering from both physical and mental disabilities. The program focuses on theory and emphasizes skill development. The program is flexible so working adults can fit the courses into their busy schedules. Courses required include human adjustment, case management, interviewing, multiculturism and group dynamics.

Counseling and Human Services Dual Degree
The University of Scranton offers a dual degree in counseling and human services. Upon completion of the program, students hold a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree. The program allows students to complete their master’s degree in less time than if they had taken the two programs separately. In order to be accepted into the program, students must have an outstanding academic record and must apply for admission while enrolled in the bachelor’s degree program. There are GPA minimums and other requirements for acceptance into this program.
Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program
The Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health program at the University of Scranton teaches students the skills they need to provide services to clients who may need assistance with everyday life. Students gain an understanding of emotional, cognitive and behavioral challenges as well as methods to help clients achieve optimal well-being. The program is 60-credit hours which includes a practicum and internship.
