Clark Atlanta University

School of Education

Formed when the two historically African American schools of Atlanta University and Clark College merged together in 1988, Clark Atlanta University is a comprehensive private institution located in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Master of Arts (M.A.) in Community Counseling

The accredited Master of Arts in Community Counseling program aims to prepare graduate students for professional counseling roles in a variety of community settings, including mental health agencies, psychiatric health hospitals, juvenile justice agencies, substance abuse treatment facilities, and government mental health services. For graduation, the School of Education requires that students successfully complete a written comprehensive examination and a communication skills exam. Focused on delivering services geared towards enhancing the career, academic, social, and personal development of children and adolescents, the curriculum involves 48 semester hours, 100 hours of clinically supervised practicum, and two 300-hour internships in a school setting. Although no teaching experience or teacher certification is required for admissions, the M.Ed. program fulfills student requirements for state certification in School Counseling in Georgia. Designed to meet the needs of both traditional and non-traditional students with courses offered generally during evening hours, the program does not require applicants to have a teaching certificate or work experience as a school teacher for consideration. In addition to intensive practicum and internship experiences in the second half of studies in elementary or secondary level settings, the program requires students to complete a minimum of 48 semester credits, including 6 semester credits in clinical internship. Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Community Counseling

The Master of Education in Community Counseling is designed to prepare students to work as professional counselors in a variety of community settings with sound counseling skills and broad understanding of counseling theories. With the aim to immerse students in the activities and identity of professional counseling, the program track is only offered on a full-time basis to complete the 54 required semester credits and two semesters of internship in an approved community setting. If interested, students also have the option of concentrating their studies with additional coursework to provide counseling for a particular client population or setting with a specialization in marriage and family therapy, juvenile offender counseling, drug and alcohol abuse counseling, geriatric counseling, and women's studies. Following the national standards by the ASCA, the curriculum involves 48 semester credits, 100 clock hours of practicum, and 600 hours of clinical experience supervised in a school setting. Students are actively engaged in coursework covering topics on cross-cultural counseling, interpersonal relations, developmental counseling, human development, individual appraisal, career development, group dynamics, psychodiagnosis, and master's research. As a cohort program, students are admitted only once per year in the summer session to proceed through the coursework as a group and completing the required courses in two calendar years.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision

Grounded in values of social justice and multiculturalism with a focus on systemic change, the doctoral Counselor Education and Supervision program track is geared towards professional school, community, and mental health counselors who already possess a master's degree from a CACREP-accredited institution. As a part-time program that usually takes three to four years to complete, the Ph.D. degree is based on a scientist-practitioner-advocate training model with a mixture of both online and in-person courses at the Gwinnett campus. Through the intensive curriculum, doctoral students are given the chance to enhance their skills and content knowledge as a method for improving services for mental health disparities within their current professional positions and providing opportunities for career advancement in the field.

Situated within one of the most beautiful cities in the South known as the "Azalea City" and one of the newest metropolitan areas in Georgia, Valdosta State University is a public institution with more than 10,500 students enjoying a mild climate within just 20 miles from the Florida border. According to the U.S. News and World Report survey from 2014, Valdosta State is ranked as the 69th best college and 30th top public school in the South. Within the James and Dorothy Dewar College of Education and Human Services, the Department of Psychology and Counseling prepares graduate training for clinical and counseling professions.

Master of Education (M.Ed.) in School Counseling

With the goal of assisting graduate students in developing the skills and competencies needed to work effectively with the students in the K-12 school system, the Master of Education (M.Ed.) in School Counseling program places an emphasis on training school counselors who function as leaders utilizing data, advocacy, collaboration, and consultation to provide academic, career, social, and personal counseling services to children. This accredited counseling program requires a total of 48 semester hours along with competency in curriculum, special education, and computer usage. If students are interested, Valdosa State also offers a School Counseling study abroad program in the culturally diverse city of London based at the University College London during the summer.
