The Department of Professional Studies at the University of Wyoming offers accredited counseling degree programs in Wyoming. The Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling prepares students to work with various cases, including individuals, couples, families, children, and teens. They are prepared to practice in an array of settings, including community organizations, independent practice, hospitals, and treatment centers. The program requires a total of 61 credit hours, including 40 credit hours of core courses and 21 hours of specialty courses in clinical mental health. The program also requires an internship under the guidance of a faculty advisor. The core courses include counseling and addictions, group procedures, counseling ethics and professional issues, assessment in counseling, multicultural counseling, couples and family theory and application, and counseling theories. Students must also complete practicum experiences in counseling as part of the core coursework. The specialty courses in mental health counseling include mental health counseling, mental health counseling II, and a supervised internship.
The Ph.D. program in Counselor and Supervision provides students with advanced understanding of counseling and enables them to become a Licensed Professional Counselor. Students must have completed at least a 48-hour master’s degree program in counseling or related area. They must then complete at least 12 semester hours of courses beyond the master’s degree. Those who have completed a 60 hour master’s degree program have the ability to petition up to 12 hours of master’s degree coursework. The doctoral degree program requires a total of 72 credit hours for completion. The credits are divided into counseling and supervision, teaching leadership and advocacy, research and scholarship, and dissertation. The counseling and supervision component includes doctorate practicums and a supervision theory course. The teaching leadership and advocacy area includes doctoral seminars, practicum in college teaching, and a supervised internship. For the research component students have the ability to select 12 credits from various courses, including correlational research, multivariate research, mixed methods research, and qualitative research. The dissertation requirement includes three credit hours for dissertation and thesis prospectus writing and then 12 credits of research.
The Master of Science in School Counseling prepares students to work as school counselors who provide consultations with students, educators, parents, and administrators in P-12 school environments. Students are prepared to offer a variety of direct services, including guidance in the classroom and systemic interventions. The program focuses on various topics, such as character education, career planning, and conflict resolution. A total of 61 credit hours, including 40 credit hours of core classes and 21 hours of specialty courses in school counseling are required to complete the degree. The core courses include counseling children and adolescents, play therapy, counseling theories, group experience, human growth and development, assessment in counseling, counseling ethics and professional issues, and multicultural counseling. As with the clinical mental health program, students must complete practicum experiences as part of the core coursework. The school counseling specialty courses include school counseling strategies and techniques, school counseling II, and a supervised internship.
