Antioch University New England

Antioch University is a small school in the New Hampshire hills. The university was founded in 1964 as Antioch-Putney College. Antioch University is a graduate school that offers four certification programs, plus masters and doctoral degrees. The school, with its small enrollment of 1,000 students, is ranked as #171 for clinical psychology degrees by the U.S. News and World Report. It has programs in Environmental Studies, Education, Psychology and Management. A statement on the school website says it is committed to “bypassed populations and learner responsibility.” The values espoused by the university are “community engagement, ecological stewardship and social justice along with a perspective that is local and global."

Antioch University Accreditation Details

The university is accredited by the North Central Association of the Higher Learning Commission. There are also specific accreditations by program. In the Psychology Department accreditations include:

• Both the MA and the PhD in Marriage and Family Therapy programs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education
• The PsyD in Clinical Psychology program is accredited by the American Psychological Association
• The MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs
• The MA degree in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling is accredited by the American Dance Therapy Association
• The Graduate certificate in Applied Behavioral Analysis is accredited by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board

Antioch University Application Requirements

Students applying for master’s programs and certificates should complete the online application form and submit it, along with a non-refundable $50 application fee to the school. They will also send a resume and an essay. Applicants should request the official transcripts from the schools that awarded their bachelor’s degrees in sealed envelopes. The university also requires three letters of recommendation and an interview with a faculty member from the department that offers the degree sought.

The master’s and certificate programs do not require students to take the GRE or another standardized test. Applicants to the PsyD program must have had a “B” average in their master’s programs. They should complete the online application and submit it, along with the $50 application fee, to the university. They also are required to send a work sample of five or fewer pages that gives an example of their written professional work, three letters of recommendation and official transcripts from all colleges they have attended. They must also take the GRE exam and have that score submitted to the school. An interview with a faculty member in the desired program is required as well.

PhD in Marriage and Family Counseling applicants must have a master’s degree from an accredited marriage and family therapy program. They should complete the online application form and submit it along with their resumes, a personal statement, a work sample, three letters of recommendation and an official transcript from the school that awarded the master’s degree. All applicants must interview with a faculty member from the program they wish to enter.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The tuition at Antioch University varies by program. Master’s programs are $949 per credit hour plus a semester fee assessment of $755. A 60-credit Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling totals approximately $62,980. The Dance/Movement Therapy Master’s is a 94-credit program that costs $93,786. Certificate tuition is $655 per credit hour plus the $755 per semester fee charge. That makes the certification in Marriage and Family Therapy cost $24,480 for the thirty-credit program. There is an Autism Spectrum certification of 12 credit hours with a tuition of $9,490 and a certification in counseling military personnel and their families that has nine credit hours. The tuition for it is $6,600. The PhD in Marriage and Family Counseling is an 80-credit-hour program that is charged by the semester but total tuition is $113,434.

Advanced degrees are costly. Unfortunately, most scholarships and grants are aimed at undergraduates. The first step in getting financial aid is completing the FAFSA. Since Antioch is a graduate school, students will probably be familiar with that process. The university uses FAFSA figures to determine financial need for school scholarships. There are several scholarships and grants offered at Antioch University. For example, The Jonathan Daniels Scholarship awards $500 to half-tuition grants to students of financial need and academic merit. Small Classes and Face Time for Great Psychology Programs

The Psychology Department at Antioch University offers several diverse degree programs. Students who want to study online can pursue a Master of Arts in Counseling and Health Professions. The three-year program features an optional substance abuse certification. The Master in Clinical Mental Health Counseling features practicum and internships that prepare students for licensure. The degree is completed in four semesters plus two semesters of internship. It also features an optional substance abuse or autism spectrum concentration.

There are three options for students earning a master’s degree in the dance therapy program. The three-and-a-half year program can be earned as a Master of Arts, a Master of Education or in a post-master certification program. The course requirements for the Master’s and the MEd degree are the same. The MEd degree offers certification if the student completes an internship. The Post-Master’s certificate in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling is a 31-credit program that can be completed in two years.

There is also a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy that requires 520 hours of face-to-face clinical practice and begins with an online summer course. In addition, students may earn a Doctor of Philosophy in Marriage and Family Therapy. There is also a PsyD program in Clinical Psychology.
