Studying Psychology at Carroll College

Though Carroll College does not offer a large number of psychology programs, it does offer an undergrad program designed for students who want to study social sciences at the graduate level later. Students have the chance to enhance their skills through internships that they do in local organizations. They might work for the local police department and learn more about forensic psychology or for a nearby children's hospital and work directly with kids. Graduates of this program went on to study psychology at major schools all across the country.

Many of the students majoring in this field join the college's Psychology Club. Members meet on a regular basis to talk about psychology topics and to get help in their classes. They also have the chance to meet alumni and get help when it comes to finding internships and applying for jobs. The club also brings in guests speakers to talk about some of the job opportunities in this field and the best ways to apply to grad school. Members even take trips and tour graduate schools together.

To earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, students must take 14 required classes, including Abnormal Psychology, Learning and Behavior, Research Methods, History and Systems in Psychology and Theories and Practice in Counseling Psychology. They will also take an elective such as Theories of Personality, Special Topics in Psychology or Law, Justice, and Forensic Psychology.

Carroll College also asks that students take one class that includes hands-on training and work. Students can do an undergrad teaching assistantship and work with their professors to teach other undergrads. They can also do a study project or an internship. Some students opt to do a senior thesis instead, especially those who want to attend graduate school. The college also offers a psychology minor. Secondary education majors at Carroll College can minor in psychology and take 15 credits of psychology courses such as Social Psychology: Social Behavior, Adolescent Psychology, and General Psychology.

About Carroll College

Carroll College ranks as one of the highest rated regional colleges in the west. Established in 1909 as Mount St. Charles College, it was one of the first schools in the west with a program designed for students who wanted to serve as priests. In addition to that program, it offered others that helped young men train in different fields and start their careers. Just a few years after opening, the college changed its admissions policy and began accepting women. That change helped the college expand its enrollment to include more than 1,3000 students today. Now called Carroll College, it is one of the only Roman Catholic private colleges in the area.

U.S. News and World Report ranked Carroll College as the best college in the west and as the top college for veterans. Its student body is almost equally split between Montana residents and students from other states, though there are more female students than males. The college has a strong reputation for its medicine and law programs because of a large number of students accepted into medical and law schools after they graduate. Many know the college for its debate and sports teams that use the names the Talking Saints and the Fighting Saints.

Carroll College Accreditation Details

Students today often use federal and state financial aid to cut down on the amount they must pay on their own. Those attending Carroll College shouldn't have any problems getting their financial aid packages because the college has regional accreditation from the NCCU. NCCU accreditation also allows transfer students to carry credits with them from another school. The college also has accreditation for its engineering, computer science, technology, and nursing programs.

Carroll College Application Requirements

Carroll College has five admissions requirements in place for incoming freshmen. It asks that students start with an application, which they can submit in one of two ways. Those applying only to this college can use the Carroll application. Students who want to apply to more than one college or university can use the Common Application. The Common Application will save all the information they upload and apply that info to any application they submit. It takes less than 30 minutes for students to fill out and submit either application. Carroll has an early action deadline of November 1, a regular application deadline of February 1 and a rolling admissions deadline of June 15 for any student who wants to start in the fall.

Though the college allows students to report their test scores on the application, it also asks that they send in their official scores later. It will accept both the ACT and the SAT scores. Students must also supply a letter of recommendation from someone who can speak to how they would perform in a college setting and their official transcripts. Carroll requires some type of essay too that shows the student's writing skills and strengths. They can submit a personal statement in lieu of an essay.

Tuition and Financial Aid

U.S. News and World Report ranked Carroll College at number three on its list of the Best Value schools in the west. Between tuition and fees, students will pay around $35,000 a year. Those who want to live on the Carroll campus will also pay close to $10,000 a year for room and board. The college has a reputation for offering large aid packages though. Students receive an average of more than $26,000 a year in terms of financial aid. The average size of the gifts awarded to students is more than $21,000 a year. Students attending the college receive aid packages that total more than $24,000 annually.

Students can submit the FAFSA starting on October 1, and the college has a priority deadline of December 1 for those who want to receive both federal aid and institutional gifts. Federal aid can include the loans the government gives to students and their parents or a grant. The college offers gifts in the form of scholarships that provide students with between $15,000 and $22,000 too. Nearly every student who attends Carroll will receive at least one institutional grant or award. Many of the available scholarships have their own application requirements. Any Carroll College student who wants to study psychology can use all the common types of aid to cover their annual costs.
