Most students attending universities and colleges receive some type of financial aid. The first step in getting help to pay for a higher education is to complete the FAFSA form. This application for federal student aid uses financial information about a student and his parents to qualify him for grants, loans and work-study programs. The best-known of these is the Pell Grant. The difference between grants and loans is that grants do not need to be paid back. Loans awarded through FAFSA do, but they carry a lower interest than private loans and feature a deferred-repayment option. Texas also offers some financial assistance. Included in this is the UTSAccess program that may waive tuition and fees for families with incomes less than $30,000. Some students may also be exempt from paying tuition and fees. There is a list of these on the UTSA website, but examples of these students are those entering the university from the foster care system or those adopted from foster care. The university has a category of aid called “Set-Aside Funds” that is intended to assist students with financial need. There are also several scholarships available through the school. Some of these are merit-based but most have a need component. Students applying for general UTSA scholarships need only complete one form in most cases. Some of the programs also ask for essays or other requirements. There are several scholarships listed on the UTSA website that have individual application forms, so students should research the financial aid page. If a student exhausts all grant and scholarship money and still is short of meeting his financial obligations, he may consider applying for a private student loan which may be at a higher interest rate than government funds but still below the APR and which have the deferred-repayment option.
